The major purpose of UVG can be divided to 3 parts.
Allow site users to add new videos:
In some cases when adding videos to your site you add them by yourself, but on community websites you may want your users to add videos. UVG works in both situations as the configuration module can be used to set which roles are allowed to add new items. UVG also supports adding internet videos, if you already know the url of an .flv video, you can specify its url and you don't need to upload it.
Encode uploaded videos for internet usage:
like Youtube, UVG allows you to upload videos in any popular formats, below you can find an incomplete list, most of these formats are not designed for internet usage, so once you upload a video, UVG encode it to Flash Video(.flv) format or MP4 format with H264 encoding, both formats are specially designed for internet usage with a good balance of video quality and bandwidth cost.
Play videos in flash video player:
- Microsoft WMV 1/2/3 (.wmv, .wm, .asf, .asx)
- Mpeg-2 encoded DVD video (.mpg, .vob)
- Real Media (.rm, .ra, .rmvb, .ram)
- Mpeg 1/2 (.mpg, .mpeg, .mpe)
- Apple Quicktime (.mov)
- Mobile phone video format (.3gp)
- DivX/XVID/Motion Jpeg (.avi)
- Apple/Sony mp4 (.mp4, .m4v)
After conversion, all videos can be played in the integrated flash video player, which shares color scheme and layout with Ultra Media Gallery player. So it is ideal to use both products on your website together and present similar user interface experience. According to Adobe's report, Flash Player is available on 99.1% computers on internet, and UVG prompts your visitors to install flash player if it is unavailable, so you can expect to safely deliver your contents to all visitors.
