I have to add a new portal to a DNN-Website and have got some questions about it, would be greatful for the answer:

The main website is in German and the new portal should be the English part eg.(http://english.thewebsite.at).

- Does it make sense to make a parent or a child portal for the secound language?

- This website has to use a temporary url, because it is a relaunch of an existing site and we will redirect the url once the DNN-site is compelety ready. Due to tutorials: first I have to make the subdomain on the hosting control panel. But it says:

DO NOT Create Virtual Subdomain if your Domain's DNS is not yet pointing to us, or if you still use temporary URL to view your site.

Virtual Subdomain is achieved using URL Rewriting technology and not all portal software will work with virtual SubDomain.

Can I proceed the new portal in this situation? Which url should I enter in the add new portal dialog box?

I think that the real answer is ... it doesn't matter.

I have several sites that are set up as child sites. I can refer to them as jncraig.com/sitea and jncraig.com/siteb. But, I also have DNS set up to point to them by their external names. I didn't have to do anything but ask that the DNS be set to point to them and add the external name to the site's portal alias table.

The rest is too comlicated for me to understand. Lee doesn't cover "Creatig child Portals" in the videos. Is there any tutorial on this site or somewhere els that describes it step for step? I need to know exactly what to do, before I destroy the installtion again ...

Creating a child portal is just like creating any other portal. There is a radio button to click that specifies a child or parent portal.

In the case of the site jncraig.com, a child portal's URL will be jncraig.com/newportal, assuming that "newportal" is the name of the new portal. Then, you browse to it as http://jncraig.com/newportal.

If you want to later have this site use the URL newportal.com, you'd have to have your DNS point newportal.com to the same IP address as your existing site. In my case, I'd have the DNS set up so that newportal.com points to the same place as jncraig.com. And, in portalalias for the site, I'd insert newportal.com in addition to jncraig.com/newportal. Then either address will get to the site.
