I have edited the web.config  using a text editor, note pad, which was suggested in a tutorial. But note pad can't save a file in .config form

How do i edit the web.config file and then save it as a .config file so it is the same type of file I initially started with.

web.config is text-based, all you need to do is right-click web.config and click Open With and choose notepad. Edit the file and save the file, it will retain the .config extension. If you are creating the web.config file from scratch using notepad then just create the file save it as web.txt then browse to the file you saved and rename it changing the extension to .config.

When you do a Save As ... in Wordpad or Notepad, change the "Save as type" from "Text Documents" to "All Files".  If you do that, the program won't append the .txt extension.  But, as noted, you can right-click on the file rename any file you've mistakenly saved with the .txt extension to your own choice.
