Hi,

I have recently installed a DNN 4.4.0 portal. For my users to login successfully they need to have this setting in IE6 checked:

Tools > Internet options > Privacy > Advanced > "Override automatic cookie handling" and "Always allow session cookies"

If these settings are unchecked, even after providing correct user-name, password, they are not logged in and see "Register" and "Login" links instead of logout.

However, in dnncreative.com or even dotnetnuke.com, we can login irrespective of the above mentioned IE6 settings. Please let us know if there are any best practices in configuring the log-in process for DNN sites. Otherwise its really embarrasing to ask every new user to check these settings before logging in.... HELP!

Sorry for the delay in responding to you, I have been having are lots of computer problems over the past few days.  The simple answer is that I have made no configuration settings to enable this, all I have done is install DotNetNuke using the default settings in the web.config file. It may be worth comparing your settings in the web.config file for any elements that mentioned cookies. The second place I would ask is your hosting provider to see if they have made any settings which would cause the problem you mention.

I'm also having the same problem with 4.4 and 4.5... and I'm only installing on local host.
What's more, I'm having problems with THIS site remembering my login and password... this is only the 5th time I'm trying to post a reply to this message.

Do you have an answer as to why I cannot get this to work?

I'm not sure, it maybe a high firewall setting or some security setting which is preventing the storage of cookies on your computer. - In localhost I found IE6 to not remember the login details, but IE7 is okay and so is Firefox. - On a live website however I have not come across this problem.

OK i have figured out my problem. The reason my users are being forced to check those settings in IE-6 is to allow 'Third-Party' cookies, and the reason why my portal cookies are being considered as 'third-party' is that the parent website uses frameset re-direction. Here is the microsoft explanation of the situation:

"Internet Explorer 6 introduced support for the Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P) Project. The P3P standard notes that if a FRAMESET or a parent window references another site inside a FRAME or inside a child window, the child site is considered third party content. Internet Explorer, which uses the default privacy setting of Medium, silently rejects cookies sent from third party sites." (Source: Session variables are lost if you use FRAMESET in Internet Explorer 6)
