I have been up too long! i added an alias to the portal portion for dnn 5, www.cincyntcc.com/dotnetnuke/default.aspx the webhosting made a virtual directory for me. we are getting this error. i have checked the web.config and tested the sql server connection and it works fine. i need help, thx. ERROR ------------------------ •This website requires you to log in. More information This error (HTTP 403 Forbidden) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but it does not have permission to view the webpage.

Your web directory doesn't have permissions set correctly. The ASP worker task needs full permission.

thx for the response. i told them what you said and they said it already has all the settings for a dnn installation.
then they said the following: I have re-checked your DNN application and found that whenever you try to access http://www.cincyntcc.com/dotnetnuke/ page it tries to access http://localhost/dotnetnuke one. Check attached image. Most probably you installed DNN to your local PC and then just uploaded files to our server. Please try to re-install this application on our host in order to resolve this issue. In case you still receive the same result after clean installation, please let us know path to the archive with DNN under your account which was used for installation and we will re-check it from our side once again

i know that i have 2 alias' like one of the tutorial said to have. one is localhost/dotnetnuke other is cincyntcc.com/dotnetnuke

should i take out one and reload my files back up to the hosting service?

when i copied my files up, i did as the tutorial said and copied the whole directory minus the data folder and minus the developer.config & release.config.

If you are trying to visit www.cincyntcc.com/dotnetnuke, you will need to have the www version also in portalalias.

Their advice to reinstall is not correct.

i leave the www out right?

when i copy up the info to the web host, i copy the entire directory that is found in my inetpub, right?

i also know that, when i installed on my machine, it created a dnnuser account. when i copied the db up to the webhost it made an account named cxxxx_dnnuser. and the dnnuser account didnt get copied up successfully, it failed. but i did change in my web.config the userid to the new cxxxx_dnnuser and the password, so it should work, shouldnt it?

You will need to include a portalalias entry for www...

The db user issue should work.  You can verify by connecting to the database with SQL Server Management Studio.

ok, the 2 aliases i have now are:

localhost/dotnetnuke
www.cincyntcc.com/dotnetnuke
i removed the
cincyntcc/dotnetnuke

hope that's right.

i am going to upload my directory again to the host.

after a small change like this, do i have to upload the whole directory in inetpub/dotnetnuke?

These changes are stored in the database, so you will just need to backup your database and install it on your live server.

One final thing I would do is change the order of the portal aliases to:

www.cincyntcc.com/dotnetnuke
localhost/dotnetnuke

You can edit these in your portal alias table in your DNN database (make a backup of your local database before making these changes just incase)

This way it will look for the live website before the locahost website

Hi Lee, thanks VERY MUCH for your reply. That helped tremendously. (and thanks to Joe too). I got it up and working now. You may want to add to your tutorial that we need to update the sql database when we make changes to the website. I know this should be obvious (now that I understand) but it may save someone alot of time. So just to make sure that I understand again, 1. If I make any admin or host changes, those update the database. so i would only need to update the database on the host server. 2. now what If I add a new page, or change content on a page. Do I need to upload the whole www directory or only a certain subdirectory and/or the database as well. Thanks for clarifying this. I am ready to start coding now!

Most content you edit in DNN is stored in the database, it doesn't create physical pages. It's when you install modules and skins when you will need to upload files as well.

So, adding a page, or adding content to a module will all be stored in the database. It may be worth looking here:
