I'm fairly new to DNN so
forgive me if this has been asked before but I haven't been able to find
the answer I need by searching...
I have just set up a new DotNetNuke Community 05.01.04 installation
which went fine until I tried creating two child portals. The portals
seem to be created ok. The numbered folders under dnnroot/portals get
created and the folders with the names of the new child portals get
created. The problem comes when I click the link to go to my new
portal(s). The link goes to http://localhost/nayland where I get a
internal server error (500). But if I manually type the address as
http://localhost/default.aspx?alias...st/nayland the portal seems
to be working fine. So it seems to be a issue with the redirecting of the URL
I using a windows 2008 server SP2, IIS 7, and both mozilla FF3 and IE7.
I suspect there is some security setting somewhere (perhaps in IIS?) that is stopping
this from working correctly but have no idea where to look. Can't find anything in the event log on the server. Can anyone
point me in the right direction? |

there is an additional setting that you need to make in IIS. - You need to follow the same method that you used in IIS to create your localhost website, but this time you point the URL for your child portal to the root of you main DNN installation files.
DotNetNuke will then take care of the rest, you just need to inform IIS where to go when you enter the URL for your child portal.
Hope this helps, thanks,

I have the same issue, but solution does not work. In my case, child portal is created and showing in the list of portal. child portal laias i give as localhost:1212/parentportal/childportal.......... whenever i try to access the child portal its not working. more or worse, the user created along with the portal is unable to login. If i try to add any pagem by default it will be added to parent portal, no option to select the portal to add a page? |

Yes, if your main dotnetnuke site is at localhost, then you do not need a separate site for myfirst site. You should remove the additional virtual directory. A child portal doesn't need it's separate definition.
I believe that the tutorial I cited will clear this up.

A child portal is like a subdirectory in another website. A child portal doesn't have it's own domain name, but tags along to the parent's domain.
parent: mydomain.com child: mydomain.com/child
Are you seeing a DotNetNuke login, or a windows login? If it is a windows login, that means you have some permissions set incorrectly.

1. What are your portal aliases? 2. When you get the error message, what is the URL that it is trying to find?

This has something to do with either (a) how the website is defined in IIS or (b) the portal alias or (c) something else that I'm not understanding. It is, unfortunately, almost impossible to diagnose without actually touching the system.
If, in IIS, you right-click on the site or virtual directory and select "Browse" are you able to see the site?
