I have one hosting account with one DNN install and multiple parent portals, each with its own domain name. I discovered late in the game that I have the option of assigning a unique folder name for the portal of each new domain I create, so my earlier portals are in numbered sub-folders under the main portal folder, apparently assigned by DNN. If I change the folder name for each numbered folder to something relating to the domain name, how does the site reference the new folder? I can find no instructions on this anywhere in the DNN help system so I am reluctant to do it without guidance.
Thanks,
Don
PS: My master domain (the first one with the hosting account) has its own folder [0] under [portals], and there is also a [default] folder under [portals]. What is the purpose of the [default] folder?

Hi Don,
The [default] folder is where all of the host files are stored eg. the skins associated with the host account. - This is what you view when you go to the file manager in the host menu.
Your portal folder is what you view when you go to admin / file manager.
This is a good question as I had missed the fact that you could setup your portal folders to have their own custom name, after a bit of playing I worked it out. - I've wished for this facility in the past to make it easier to see which folder relates to which portal and it's already part of DNN, so thanks for pointing this out!
OK, to setup DNN to use customised portal folder names:
Go to Host / Portals
Add New Portal
Portal Type - Child
Add to the end of the portal alias the url that you would like to use (ie. your portal name)
Home Directory - click on customize
enter "Portals/YourCustomFolderName" (This will place your folder within the portals folder)
Fill out all other details as usual.
You will now see in the main portals folder the customized folder name that you created.
If you wish to rename folders that you have already created, I don't know how you would go about this are there is not the facility to edit these details direct within the DNN portals.
I also do not know if this is a good idea. - You may have created links all over your portal which refer to the folder name and if you rename the folder you will have to rename all of your links.
Does this help? Thanks,
Lee Sykes

Thanks Lee. It helps in that I can now avoid a disaster created if I rename the folders. It would be nice to have a tutorial some day addressing where all the "stuff" lives in DNN. I know where it goes when I name the folder (i.e. images, documents, etc), but otherwise I am clueless.

Doesn't setting the portals up as child portals prevent the domain name resolution to the correct portal - the reason there are parent portals. Child portals require the domain/childportalname URL when what he wants is a domain/ URL?

Thanks fkx, I misread the post thinking it was child portals.
For any other users reading this - The same process that I mentioned above can be applied for creating parent portals with custom folder names.
