I'm currently using DNN 5.6.1
I have an HTML module. The only thing that is in it are news items. Hyperlinks and breaks between the news items.
I set Syndication on in the module settings.
When I click on the Syndicate in the dropdown box, I do see the RSS xml. My question is this:
The output looks like the following:
Office of Military Commissions
(My lengthy prologue to my website)
Then it lists the Title of the HTML module with a date below that:
News/Media Releases Military Commissions Press Releases
Wednesday, June 08, 2011 2:54 PM
Finally, it lists the top item on the page. As such:
April 20, 2011 – DOD Announces Charges Sworn Against Detainee April 04, 2011 – Statement of...
---------------------------------
What I don't see are the many other press items below this. Why is this?
When I add a new press release to the top, will this change to reflect the new press release?
Is the syndication tied to the Search scheduler? Since mine is set to 12 hours, will it be a 12 hour wait before the RSS is updated?
Thanks for the help!

When you syndicate the contents of an HTML module, there is only one item of content -- the module's contents.
I suspect that the syndicator takes the first N characters (or some other part of the content) and uses the title and that chunk of the entire content as the RSS feed. If you look at the feed in a reader, you'll be able to click the title to read the entire item. I believe that requires retrieving the entire item, which is separate.
If you add another item -- you edit the content of the module -- that will appear in the feed.
But ... the syndicator isn't "showing the first item", it's just showing the first part of the content.
I would think that the Announcements module would be a better choice here. Each announcement would be included in the feed.

I see. I can leave the announcements up for all eternity, correct? Meaning they don't need to expire and can just keep expanding, yes?
Thanks Joe. You've been so incredibly helpful to us getting this ready for the globe.

Yes. You can also limit the number that are displayed ...

Joe,
I've created the Announcements module content. I've set it up for Syndication. However, when I select the Sybdicate dropdown, I see the following:
Office Of Military Commissions Press Releases - March 30, 2007 ---> (linked to my Announcment module pane)
Yesterday, June 14, 2011, 8:24:20 AM ---> (Shows when I aded the Announcement on my website)
[Description of Announcement] --->(Is what's in the description area of the Announcement. On my announcemnet, it's actually linked to the Press Release)
Office Of Military Commissions Press Releases - April 24, 2007 ---> (linked to my Announcment module pane)
Yesterday, June 14, 2011, 8:24:20 AM ---> (Shows when I aded the Announcement on my website)
[Description of Announcement] ---> (Is what's in the description area of the Announcement. On my announcement, it's actually linked to the Press Release)
I've obfuscated the area for [Description Of Announcement} here. What happens is that the "Office Of Military Commissions Press Releases " is hyperlinked to the item in the syndicate. When clicked on, it goes to the Press Releases page with my module.
Also, it's showing the very old stuff first, when on my announcements module, I have the latest showing up at the top.
I need the link to go to the actual Press Release which is on different websites. I have that linked in the Description of Announcement area, which is hyperlinked on the announcement page to the actual press release, but it's not hyperlinked in the feed.
How can I oreder this stuff or change what the feed shows?
Thanks!

OK ... with that additional information I'm going to suggest that you use Ventrian's News Articles module instead of the Announcements module. The NA module is totally templateable, including the template for the RSS feed. So, you should be able to configure the content of the syndicated items to your liking. (I've used it to include latitude and longitude into the RSS feed so that items could be geo-coded for display on a map.)
As for order and the number of items syndicated: I believe that there is a querystring parameter that can be used to limit the number of items included. So, you could limit to the most recent N items. I don't know if you could include a starting date.
Yes, the syndication is tied to search, but I'm not sure if it happens on the same schedule. Probably the easiest way is to try it and see.
