It looks like there is something wrong with your web.config file. Assuming that you started with the "install" package and modified release.config, you might want to just throw away your web.config and start fresh with a copy of release.config. Did you do any special configuration? Just to make sure that your IIS web site is operating more or less correctly, you can put a file named index.htm in the web directory's root. The file should have some simple text or html in it. I like to put "hello!' in the file. If browsing to the web site displays the file, then you know that the web site if working correctly. That would also point you toward looking over web.config. |

Joe, Thanks for the recommedation...dropped a quick index.htm file with "Hello, how are you? and it worked fine so it looks like I've got IIS working. I started with the "install" package and modified release.config...all I did however was rename the release.config to web....in older versions of DNN (3.X) I had to change it to web.config...in watching Lee's video he did not modify the web.config or rename the release.config for installing 4.5. I was pretty confident I had followed his recommendations although at this point I'm not sure. I also did not create the "database.mdf" file recommended in the DNN install instructions because Lee's video did not mention either. I pretty much tried to follow Lee's example with the exception of the directory's name...DNN482...also set up the virtual directory in IIS with DNN482. I looks like it is trying to start but doesn't...I've tried running the install in the following way. http://localhost/DNN482/ http://localhost/DNN482/install/install.aspx http://localhost/DNN482/install/installwizard.aspx I kept the 4.8.2 unziped directory unchanged so I could copy fresh versions of the web and release config files into the DNN482 directory. If I understood Lee's instructions I should not have to modify the web.config file since I'm using SQLExpress... Anyway...I'm still baffled in Louisiana . Terry |

Terry, Yes, it looks like you've pointed the website in the right place, and that IIS is working. But, the fact that you got some errors indicates some sort of problem. I'd try simply copying the existing release.config to a new web.config. What happens when you browser to the site. You should see DotNetNuke start and run the wizard. If this doesn't happen, you want to double check the ASP.NET is installed and the ASP.NET extensions are enabled. That one caught me over the weekend on a new site. Eventually, though, you will have to create a database and a username and password for it. You'll need to give that information to the wizard before it can continue. So ... let me know what errors you get when you try this again. |

Joe, Would it matter that I've got the ASP.Net 3.5 installed? The virtual directory is still set for 2.0....I checked my installed programs and see ASP.Net 1.1, 2.0 (SP1), and 3.0 (SP1) are listed as installed...hmm...maybe I need to uninstall everything ASP.Net and install ASP.Net 2.0...and go from there. Thanks for the advice....I'll probably have more questions later. Terry |

No, the other versions of ASP.NET shouldn't matter. You should have the website for DotNetNuke set to 2.x, though. But, I believe it will run just fine as a 3.5 site. DON'T go through the reinstallation stuff. What is the current error message? |

Joe, I keep getting the same results...Not sure what I'm doing wrong... I'll try and go step by step again this weekend and see if I can resolve the problem...can't seem to get the wizard start or the install either... I've recopied the original files and tried to start the install by navigating to the http://localhost/DNN482/ same results each time...renamed the release to web ...no difference... |

It the error that you keep getting the error you posted in your first message? Have you deleted web.config and tried starting again? |

Hello,
Just to clarify:
When installing DotNetNuke to localhost using SQLServer express and the install package you do not need to look at the release.config.
All is correctly setup in the web.config and you do not need to edit it
Also, the database is already created within the dnn install files (for sql server express)
So, when you go through the installation wizard, all you need to do is click on the check database connection, you do not need to make any modifications.
- If you are installing to SQL Server 2005, you do need to make modifications, but in this case it sounds as though you are following the correct procedure.
It should not matter that asp.net 3.5 is installed, but I would make sure asp.net 2.0 is selected just to make sure its not that causing problems.
So, have you managed to get to the wizard screen, or do you get this error before the wizard?
If its before it, try re-applying the asp.net security permissions to all of the files in your install folder - do this as the last step before attempting install. (You can remove the security permissions and then re-apply them to make sure)
Let us know how you get on, thanks,

Lee, I did as you recommend and still get the same error...Just to recap to make sure I haven't missed anything... Windows XP Pro (Media Edition 2005) SQLExpress ASP.Net 3.5 DotNetNuke_04.08.02_Install (unzipped) Virtual Directory named DNN482 pointing to DNN482 (directory on my "C" drive) ASP.Net Version 2.0.50727 default.aspx added to the default documents list Removed ASP.Net (Machine Account) from the DNN482 directory and added it back with Full Control I did not modify any of the web.config or release.config files. tried to browse to the http://localhost/DNN482 directory and the install script (or rather something starts a lot of activity) starts Then I get the same error listed above... I'm not able to make it to the install wizard before I get the error. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Suggestions???? Thanks again for your help. Terry |

All, Not sure if this was the problem...however; I did a completely new install of my OS...installed .Net Framework 2.0, SQLExpress and started over...I did find where I had made a mistake in my installation of SQLExpress...After another failed attempt with different errors I realized I had chosen Windows Authentication mode for SQLExpress. After some digging on the different forums I found how to change the authentication mode to mixed through the registery by changing the setting for login from 1 (meaning windows authentication) to 2 (mixed authentication). Went back http://localhost/DNN482 and the install wizard started with no problems... Of course this was a lot of work to figure out what I was doing wrong but no matter what changes I made I could not get the installation to succeed. All is well now...thanks again for all the feedback and recommendations. |

Lee, I actually watched the installation of SQL Server but somehow was distracted or not paying attention when you talked about the authentication mode...I caught it after a second viewing...your videos really are very helpful... Thanks again for the help. Terry |
