Hi Joseph, I just wanted to send a big shoutout for you on Forum Friday for all of the help you continue to give everyone on the forums! I am sure that some of the questions has you pulling your hair out some days but I must tell you that it is great knowing there is someone on the other side, always helping with our DNN issues! If I may ask, how many questions on average do you answer in a day? Once again, thanks... I never turn to the DNN forums because I know I can count on you to give me the right answer. Many thanks from all of us at the Nedoweb.com team! |

Thanks for your kind words, Jim! The records show that I first became a member of the DNNCreative community on 12/1/2006. I've also posted 8217 messages to the forums, so this message will be number 8218! I became a "staff member" somtime in 2007 I think. I try to answer every message in the forums that needs an answer, even if the answer is "beats me!"

That's awesome Joseph! I think we should start an international Forum Friday campaign where we get to know the kings of questions! |

Oh ... it's Friday! I've been working with DotNetNuke since sometime in 2006. It looks like I first registered at the DNNCreative site on 12/1/2006. I started doing official support here sometime in 2007. |

So you had never worked on DNN before then? Do you have background in the technology DNN uses? |

Yes, I've been involved with software nearly forever. I first worked on a website in 1995! |

Do you deal mostly with DNN or are there other CMS systems you enjoy too Joe? By far the best for me is Sitefinity but it comes with a very hefty price tag. And I almost gave up on DNN when they then launched DNN6 which is by far the best improvement I have seen yet. |

Oh, it's Friday again! Actually I have done a small amount of work with Wordpress and Joomla. In fact, I'll be spending the weekend immersed in Joomla. That's mainly because a client needs some work done to an existing Joomla site. Mainly, though, it's been DotNetNuke. I got hooked a few years ago when using it saved me about 6 months of work. That was enough for me to take it seriously. Since then (2006) there have been steady improvements. DotNetNuke 6 is a quantum leap, IMHO. |

Joe, in your opinion. What is the major items in DNN you would like to see change? Perhaps the biggest one for me is separating content from design! Whether you are design and developing a skin from scratch or implementing a theme someone has chosen to buy, I have to this day not found a solution/skin, where I can separate content from design much the same way as Joomla, WordPress or even Sitefinity works. And if you do something wrong, or implement JS that comes with a theme, you can spend hours and hours and hours fixing the backend of DNN because you need to figure out where in a theme the conflicting JS might be breaking DNN so badly rendering it unusable. Do you know of any plans/ know of the right people to talk to about this at DNN? I ask all of my DNN questions here because I refuse to go to DNN's forums for lack of response but clearly that is where all development happens. Many thanks |

I'm not sure that I completely understand the issue. If the problem is a badly implemented skin, blame the skin ... and get it fixed. If you have something in your content that breaks a skin, that's also a design problem. And, if I'm really not understanding ... please help me with that ...

Hi Joe, That's exactly the problem. If you break the backend of a DNN skin you need to fix it, double the amount of work that needs doing if "administration of content" was separated from front end design. If you look at the way Joomla, WordPress and Sitefinity work, the frontend is separate from the backend so you don't need to fix anything. You basically add only content to the backend and from the front end "assign" the content you have added to the backend. DNN is double the amount of work that needs doing IF something goes wrong which inevitably it will if you are using the same skin for both front and backend. Just something thoughts on ways to improve DNN and to see what others might think too? |
