I'm trying to get a javascript function created in one module (and also called in that module) to generate text in a different module on that page. My function works just fine inside its own module, but even though I've created a unique ID for the DIV I'm trying to effect, I can't seem to get it to work.
In a nutshell:
I created a Form and List module that collects a text input, "Contributor". In my XSLT script, I have it check to see if there is a value in the "Contributor" column, and if there is it calls my function. I put my javascript function in the header of my Form and List module.
Then I have an HTML module on the page with a DIV that has the ID my function is looking for (via getElementById). Even though the function gets called, I don't think it knows where to find my DIV.
Is there a way to get more specific with my function in telling it where to return the result? I know the module ID (706), so it seems like there should be a way for me to tell it, "In Module 706, find the 'go-bal-contributor' DIV and return this info there".... or am I wrong and there's no way to get this to work?
Thanks for any help you can provide!
PS, if I could only put more than one instance of my Form and List module on one page *sigh*
***************Javascript Function in Form & List Header**************
<code><script type="text/javascript">
function list_contributor(contributor_name, article_title) {
var name = contributor_name;
var title = article_title;
var previousInnerHTML = new String();
previousInnerHTML = document.getElementById('go-bal-contributor').innerHTML;
previousInnerHTML = previousInnerHTML.concat('<div style=\"background-color:#f4f8fa; padding:5px 10px; margin:0 25px 8px 10px; border-top:1px dotted #999999; color:#0072b0; font-size:12px; font-weight:bold;">', name, '<br /><span style="font-size:10px; color:#666666;\">Article Title: ', title, '</span></div>');
document.getElementById('go-bal-contributor').innerHTML = previousInnerHTML;
}
</script></code>
************Conditional Call to Function in Form & List XSLT***********
*****(the is pre-translation to XSLT, but I know the function call works after the transition because I got it to work inside my module)*********
<code>
<script type="text/javascript">
if("[Contributor]")
{
list_contributor("[Contributor]", "[Title]");
}
</script></code>
**************HTML Module (706) Snippet**************
<code><div id="go-bal-contributor" style="width: 325px;">
</div></code>

Because javascript is executed on the client side and after the page has been constructed, you probably want to look at the page source to make sure that things are named as you think they are.
Also, all of the major browsers (IE, FF, Chrome) include tools that can be used to debug javascript. So, you can set some breakpoints in your javascript code and trace what actually happens.
That said, you may find it "easier" to do this with jQuery, but that's another story.

Ah, you are right Mr. Craig. When I created a button to force it to perform the function after the page was loaded (from the Form and List module) it works just fine. Doh! I guess I probably would need to do this in jQuery, but yes, that is another story for another day.
Thanks for you help.
