Hello all. My new site, under development, resides on a Windows 7 computer running IIS 7.5.

I have a share at the portal level so that I can easily copy pdf's, photos, and other files to the site. Our marketing person needed access to the share to copy in her updated photos and such, so, great, I gave her permission to the share. She is able to copy her updated files to the share. But now my site is broken.

On the webserver, I go to localhost/sitename and I receive 401.3 Unauthorized.

I will admit I dont understand the underlying permissions well. I originally set up the site using the tutorial Installing on Windows 7, video 5, manual method, and it has worked quite well. I wish I had thought twice before making such a change.

I have a backup but it does not include some changes, and besides, it seems like I should be able to figure this out.

I have been looking and trying but so far I am unable to reset the proper permissions. Please advise.

The web directory and all of the files and subdirectories need to grant full permissions to the IIS User Task that runs the website. If some files or directories have lost these permissions, that could explain the problem.

Start by going to the root web directory and right click to select Permissions. Try giving full permissions to the Network Service task, assuming that is the correct one. If it isn't, you may have to dig into the settings of the IIS AppPool to learn the identity of the default user.
