our church has an exisiting website which we are replacing, today hopefully, with a new DNN site.  We have built the site over  the web using dev.website.com, but I can also access the install with remote desktop.  I am ready to switch the dnn install to www.website.com.  I'm using DNN 5.5 and only have basic skills.

if i just put in a domain alias and changed the dns servers to point to the dev. install will that hurt our traffic and search engine ranks?

I am willing to spend a little  on a module to make this seemless and/or have the ability to sync the dev. and live sites periodically.

I apologize if this has already been covered, I didnt see anything recent.

Yes that tutorial will help you make the changes, but you will also need to check what will happen to the existing URLs on your website?

If those URLs are going to be lost when you change the site to a new DNN site then I would checkout: iFinity URL Master Module

You can set it up with 301 permanent redirects which means that the search engine results you currently have to your existing URLs will be re-directed to the URLs you specify, therefore saving your search engine ranks.

If you are making some simple chnages such as a skin re-design then your rankings should be ok as the current existing pages will not be removed.
