Hi Lee and Joe
Am I wrong in believing that the current default.css file has grown in size, as it seems much bigger than earlier DNN versions?
I have managed to reduce it using css-shorthand etc. from 22KB to 15KB. However, the file seems to contain quite a number of extra classes which are not included in your own reduced (12KB) default.css file.
I was wondering if these extra classes are essential or perhaps surplus to requirements and only included - just in case.
Thanks
Lynn

There is a beta version of a new default.css file and you might want to read the blog entry at
http://tinyurl.com/26fsv7r.
You'll find a link there to the Codeplex site from which you can download it.

Hi Joe
Thanks for the reply and link.
The default_beta.css might be a smaller file size because the contents have been compressed, but the classes and selectors are the same. I appreciate the effort of the DNN team on trying to reduce this file from 22KB to 16KB, this is certainly a step in the right direction.
I have managed to reduce the default file to 15KB using css shorthand, combining elements and merging properties, I have since further reduced it to 10.8KB by compressing the file -whilst still readable.
My question is - have extra classes been recently added to the default.css file?
Thanks
Lynn

I don't know the answer to your question. My reading of the blog entry that went with the new default.css as that this was "better" than the current one.
There is also a skin object available that will unload CSS files. That doesn't solve the page weight issue, but it could remove files that you don't want.

Hello,
Yes extra classes have been added. It's hard for me to say yes go ahead and remove classes x,y,z because it depends on the code that you are using in your skin.
For instance there is quite a bit of code in there for styling the main menu, do you need that or have you coded it in your skin?
If you are unsure about removing sections I would simply create a backup of your default.css file and then start removing sections that you don't think you need, test it out in action with your skin and if you find you need those sections of code you can always add them back in from the backup version.
Most of the classes have a comment next to them so you should be able to judge if you need them.
Thanks,
Lee
