File Manager does not seem to protect index.html files. If you create a folder using the Secure File System through file manager and place an index.html file in the folder and try to access the file directly by entering the url in a browser, you are able to access the file directly eventhough you are not suppose to be able to do so. Once you access this fille you can access other files linked from this page. Does any one have any experience or a solution for this please?

If you wish to create a secure page, it would be best to create the page in DotNetNuke and then setup the security roles so only certain users can access that page.

Thanks for your reply but this is not appropriate because if you have a self-contained group of files with a folder structure etc. ( an entire html website for example) and want to copy the root folder which contains the index file and the rest of the files into your DNN site say via FTP then use File Manager to sync the folder and apply security, it doesn't work. Your suggestion would mean that you recreate every single file in that folder within DNN which is simply not practical. Any other offers? Regards,

Also, I am familiar with the functions within the links you have provided. These work well if you do it the way you describe through DNN, however what I am referring to is using the File Manager and particularly creating a folder with the "Secure - File System"

In that case, I'm not sure how you would get this to work with an index.html file, anyone else any suggestions?
My only other thought would be to setup security directly within your hosting setup rather than DNN, especially when you are using an index.html file and not making use of DNN itself to display the html page.

Thanks for your response. Yes I can do it with password protecting a directory but again this doesn't meet my requirements because I actually would like to charge for access to material in the folder. It would seem I have to recreate the entire thing within DNN itself. This means a bit of work, but if that's my only option then I guess that's what I have to do. This makes the "Secure - File System" within DNN quite disappointing. I really can't understand why this should be a problem as I am able to create a "secure folder" with File Manager, use FTP to move the whole folder and files into the portal root, sync it with File Manager and even though it has the padlock on it, entering a direct URL to a file in that folder in the browser, just goes straight in! It would be useful if anyone has a solution for this before I embark on moving it all into DNN.

I would suggest you also ask this in the dotnetnuke.com forums as there may be other users on there that have set this up, if you come across an alternative solution, please do let us know, thanks,

just remove index.html from iis.
iis > server > websites
right click on your website > select properties
go to the Documents tab
Remove all documents except default.aspx (unless you have some extremly cutomized splash page)
