Hello, Its been about a year now and I still can not get the upgrade to work. I posted this in the DNN site and no replies. Lee or Joe can you help. When upgrading from 4.7 to 4.8.0 it works fine but any other version from 4.7.0 or 4.8.0 to (4.8.2 - 4.9.5) I get the same error. I can go back to the web site after this error and It seems like the upgrade worked when I navigate to the Host setting it list the site as the version I tried to upgrade to. Any suggestions. I have tried almost every thing I can think of. Can you upgrade from 4.8 to 4.9.5?
Are you using the auto-merge approach, or are you manually editing web.config?

Try doing the upgrade using the auto-merge method: just copy the Upgrade package on top of the existing web directory and then browse to the site to trigger the upgrade.
You might "enjoy" this more if you try it on a non-live site. Make a copy of the existing site, and copy it to a localhost or otherwise experimental computer. Get it running there, and then experiment with upgrades.

Hello Joe, After intense testing with the merge method which is much easier than manual I am getting the same results I even truncated some tables to get a leaner DB which did not help. But I did notice that when upgrading from 4.7 to 4.8.00 upgraded fine and then to 4.8.01 everthing works but when I upgrade from 4.8.01 to 4.8.02 or above this version I get the error. I have tried it with the manual method and the merge method. I did what Sebastian Leupold suggested at DNN
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community...fault.aspx
but same results. Any other ideas?

After that error, can you get to the home page as discussed in the forum thread?

What modules do you have installed?
Are there any third-party modules installed which are not compatible?
If you are not sure, I would install your live website on your localhost computer, I would then delete all third party modules and see if you can then upgrade. - if you can, you know that a third party module is to blame and you can then start the process again to try and find which module is causing the problem.
You may find it useful to view the process I did for upgrading in this tutorial by outline a series of troubleshooting steps I had to take, (it's an earlier version, but the same principles apply for troubleshooting):

Lee,
Great point and after all the testing I have done I think this is the last thing it could be. There are about 30 different 3rd party modules that we are using. Like easy AD login, bulk load, flash rotator and so on. Is there an easy way to delete and determine which module might be causing the issue or will I have to uninstall a set or one by one of module and then try the upgrade every time under
Edit Module Definition
. If so will I have to do anything extra when uninstall under host module definition besides checking the delete files?
