3.3.7 to 4.9.5 Upgrade Problem

I've upgraded more than a dozen sites from DNN v3.3.7 to v4.9.5 following instructions I found (here, I think) with little or no problems. This one has got me completely stumped and ready to break something out of frustration.

During the install process I get an error message that the file \Install\Module\Links_3.3_Install.zip cannot be found. I've tried everything I can think of without solving the problem. The strange thing is that the file IS there before I start the upgrade! I've made sure it's there. It looks odd to me that from the update listing (included below) it installs module file Links_04.00.01_Install first, then tries to install module file Links_3.3_Install.

I'm running out of ideas. I've tried:

Reinstalling the 3.3.7 links module before updating.
Deleting and reinstalling the 3.3.7 links module before updating.
Installing a new install version of DNN 3.3.7 over the site (keeping my old web.config) before updating. This does make sure the missing file is there before the update starts.

None of these changed things in the slightest!

Help! I'm so frustrated right now that instead of going home like a good boy I'm going out to get drunk! Hopefully someone will have an answer when I get in tomorrow.

Did you also notice the SQL error? I'm actually surprised that you are able to get from 3.3.7 to 4.9.5 in a single step. I would have thought that you need to get to 4.6.2 and then go from there in one step to 4.9.5. Before 4.6.2, there are manual edits that need to be done to web.config as part of the upgrade. After that, you don't need to do that. Also, there are changes going from 3.x to 4.x including changing ASP.NET to 2.x. Anyway, the link error appears to be file permissions or a filled disk. You could check there. It could also be that there is a bad file and that you need to re-upload the upgrade.

That SQL error occurs every time I do the 3.3.7 to 4.9.5 upgrade. It apparently doesn't mean anything important. As I said, I've done this exact type of upgrade many times before with no problems at all. As long as you keep a copy of your old web.config file to copy the sql connection data and validation keys from, and use the 4.9.5 INSTALL version instead of the update version there's usually no problems. There are no file permission problems in this case, nor is there a disk space problem. The file it's complaining about IS THERE when the update starts. It appears that there's some strange versioning problem with that one particular module (links). For some bizarre reason it runs the 4.0 update, apparently deletes the old files, then tries to run the 3.3 update and fails with the file not found error. Why it wants to run the 3.3 update at all I don't know (its already at version 3.3.7), and why it tries to run it AFTER the 4.0 update is an even bigger mystery.

When you have copied your DNN 4.9.5 files over the top of the v3 files, before initiating upgrade, go to the install / modules folder, have a look if there are several links modules in there. If there is a v3.x links install zip file try removing it so that it just attempts to upgrade it to DNN4.x
