I want to localize the Register and Login button. I have looke everywhere, in the shared resources and global resource files, but I can't seem to find the settings for localizing the text of these buttons.

You can find those strings using the Language Editor. If you can't find them by digging around -- start in the Global file -- let us know.

I couldn't find "Register" (or "Login") in the Language Editor options. Since we will be getting paid subscribers, calling the link "register" doesn't make too much sense. Any more clues?

Look in ...
Local Resources,
DesktopModules,
Admin,
Authentication,
App_LocalResources,
Login.ascx
The string for "Register" is named
cmdRegister.Text.

OK - that's a great start - that fixed the "register" the on the Login module - there are two more "register" references - in the skin (tokens) - in the header and in the breadcrumb - any clue on where i'd find them? Also, by changing them in the Lanquage Editor, they will stay changed even if I upgrade DNN or a Module, right? Your help is greatly appreciated (as are the DNN Creative videos!

Sometimes you just have to dig to find what you need.
Skin objects have attributes that can be set. That includes text. You'll want to look at the documentation for the skin objects. Look at the DNNCreative Skinning Toolkit and tutorials. Also look for the DotNetNuke Skinning Guide at dotnetnuke.com. There are also some newer notes on more recent versions in Timo Breumelhof's blog at the DotNetNuke site.
If you don't have them, I'd recommend investing in several of the books about DotNetNuke that are available. The book by Chris Hammond and Patrick Renner is a good, and intentionally very basic, start. The Professional DotNetNuke 5 book has a lot of information.
