I followed the tutorial 22 step by step, had also changed the web.config. But couldn'taccess my localhost installtion any more: The site is currently not available.
Okay I undo all changes I had made and also deleted the database from SQLServerExpress. But the site isn't still availble.
Please give me a hint, what can I do? I really need my localhost installation.
Thanks |

Did you also modify the PortalAlias table in your database? |

Many thanks for the answer. No, I didn't ... I think it wasn't included in tutorial nr. 22. I am somehow confused. May you please kindly let me know where and how to do it? Is it also necessary for puting the appl. on the production server?
Thanks again! |

PortalAlias is a table in the DotNetNuke database. It's also available from the Host's Portals page.
I'm pretty sure that this is mentioned in the video, as it's quite important. You might want to watch the video again.

Sorry, I wasn't subtle enough. Of course I had edited the portal alias in the application. My problem is the SqlServer unstallation on my machine. Otherwise the tutorial is perfict!
Thanks again |

Does that mean that the problem is fixed?

Unfortunately no!
VWD comes with SQL Express 2008. Since I have updated the VWD installation on my computer, SQLServerExpress 2005 donesn't work any more.
I did all steps with 2008. Once I set the Connctionstring to the live website, the local application works! But a local COnnectionstring not I tried various connection strings, also :
"Data Source=.PC\SQLEXPRESS2008; Initial Catalog=Database.mdf;
But it doesn't work eighter. Fixing a database connection is the problem ...
Thanks for the consideration.

... then it is not possible to establish a connetionstring for DNN with SQLServerExpress 2008 and a SqlExpress2005 databse? Should I stop trying different connectionstrings again and again? Using the virtual pc is a "must" to bring the application work on the localhost again?
Thanks |

I think that we need to restart the conversation, as I am a bit confused. This started as something that seemed to be related to portalalias issues, but now it has evolved to one regarding SQL Server.
When you moved your site to localhost, did you also move the database? I take it that the database is now installed on a SQL Server Express 2008. Is that right?
Are you able to look at the database using SQL Server Management Studio Express, or a similar tool? In other words, can you verify that your database is there?
You connection string to the database needs to refer to the server, to the database, and give a username and password for access. Note also that there are two copies of the connection string, and that both need to be correct.
You can certainly use SQL Server 2008 Express, but you need to have the correct connection string.

You are right, little bit confusion. Here the story:
First I had a local host installation and wanted to transfer it to the webserver. I went through tutorial 22 step by step, made the backup and put it on the production server. Everything worked on the production server proper and very good (thanks your helps).
But since SqlServerExpress 2008 has owned the database, I can't run my localhost installation anymore. The problem is the connection with the database, which is on the is sqlserver for the time now. Once I connect the application to the database on the production server it works. But I need to work with the database on my computer, to avoid some possible ruination of database on the server during my tests.
I have tried some possible connection strings, e.g.
Or even
But unfortunately nothing works. I have granted the permissions as in tutorial. Maybe they are not the same in 2008? I have no idea what the problem could be here?
Thanks again

Try googling "connection strings" and you should find some examples of what your connection string should look like.
