Having followed the tutorial of how to backup a live site on a local server running SQL 2005 Express and after much stress not caused by the excellent tutorial but rather problems that I have created, I am finally at the point where I believe that I have everything as right as I can get it but there is still some configuration that I am overlooking. When I ask to go to the alias site it instead puts the "." in front of com and goes back to the live site. Can you help? TIA |

Review the tutorial again, and look for the part that describes altering the PortalAlias table. You'll need to remove the reference to localhost and replace it with references to the correct url. |

I could be really confused but I am going from a url to a localhost. The site is up and running fine on a host site (webhost4life.com) and I do have an installation of a brand new test site running fine on the localhost so I was able to get that much done. What I am trying to do now is take the site that is running on the host site (webhost4life.com) and put it on my localhost site under an allias bbyteonlinecom but when I type in http://localhost/bbyteonlinecom it resolves to bbyteonline.com and opens up my online site. I have added bbyteonlinecom to the host file in /Windows/ststem32/drivers/... and I also tried doing an HTTP redirect in IIS manager but that didn't work. I believe that there is a host value key in the web.config file and I added different combinations to the value with nothing happening. Guessing, I believe that there is still something in the permissions or database but I am not sure how to troubleshoot that. |

Looking at video #1 and reviewing the alias addition to the portal I found that I had followed the instructions clearly and double checked for any spelling or typos and it was as it showed in the video. I believe that it was in video #3 where is showed adding the alias and I feel good about following that step also. Is there a place where I can check out that step or do I need to try a re-install? |

There is a table called portalalias in your DB.if you have given any qualifier name the the name of the table will be qualifiername + portalalias.Just edit the first entry that you see in the table. |

Thank you so much for the database pointer and it was indeed set with the .com and I made the change and got closer. Now it is telling me that it can't open the website. I quickly tried just the localhost and it gave me the IIS welcome screen so I am still missing something. I am not sure where to look next. |

If you can see the IIS welcome when browsing to http://localhost, that tells you that IIS is configured correctly. Put a simple html file in your web directory and try browsing again. You should see that file, and not your DotNetNuke site. That will tell you that IIS is pointed correctly to your website. Rename index.htm to app_offline.htm. If you see that when browsing, it then tells you that ASP.NET is working correctly. Remove app_offline.htm, and try again. If you get an error, please copy and paste here the contents of your portalalias table. |

Thanks so much; adding the localhost did the trick. The ajax control is causing a problem: BC30456: 'RegisterPage' is not a member of 'DotNetNuke.Framework.AJAX'. I committed that section out and the site loaded without modules. Not sure but do I need to do something with IIS? |

It does seem like an AJAX issue on your server.

Not sure what to do to correct the Ajax issue. I have a fresh install of DNN on the same localhost server which doesn't have any issues so I am lost as to what to do next. |

Some suggestions ... - Go through the host settings and compare the configuration of the one that works with the one that doesn't.
- Compare the files in the /bin directory.
- Compare the web.config files.
If I understand, there are two installs of DotNetNuke on the same machine, and one works fine. Then, you've got to find what's different in the second, non-working, installation. It could be a module in the non-working installation that has a different AJAX issue. I would also suggest that -- if you haven't done this already -- ask this question over in the Install It forum at dotnetnuke.com. |

Some other shots in the dark ...
Are the two installs the same version of DotNetNuke?
One person reported that this resulted from a bad install. Does Default.aspx.vb have the same date as other files?
Which versions of DotNetNuke are you using?

Hello:
I just wanted to add my two cents...
I am having the same redirect problem with DNN_491 and webhost4life.com.
I am wondering if there was any resolution?
Lee, I LOVE your videos. I am so happy I found this community. I would be lost without it! |

Yes, in my case it was this that Lee found: Looking at the url, you are missing the localhost section, ie. in the portalalias table you should have: localhost/dnn_453_xhtmlskins |
