Just read your configuring dotnetnuke article again. I've been working on an internal site and had a previous problem so cleared the site and database and did a fresh installation of dotnetnuke to a live server. Please tell me were I went wrong. Here's what I did.
I downloaded lastest dotnenuke 4.3.4 install. I unzipped it on my computer then uploaded all the files to the new site. - first mistake?
I edited the dotnetnuke.install.config file as per your configuring tutorial and uploaded the file to the install file. The only difference is you call it dotnetnuke.install.resources.
I edited the config file for sql connections.
I get a Server Error in "/" application.
Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.
Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
|
And have the customErrors mode="Off" in the config file.
I've been searching all day and it looks like an IIS issue and have set all the correct permissions but no chance of the site loading.
Did I go drastically wrong somewhere I don't know where else to check for errors.
Again thanks for your help!

Hello,
What I would suggest is if this is the first time installing 4.3.4 to your hosting provider that you just install the default installation without making any changes to the configuration, just to make sure that you can install it and get it working correctly with your hosting providers setup.
- You install it exactly as you mention by downloading install zip and uploading it to your hosting provider. - Just set the settings you need in the web.config file.
If your running in Medium Trust then you need to use the development.config file and rename it to web.config file.
This info is in the DNN installation docs.
We are also putting together an installation article for the next issue.
Once you have done that you can wipe it all and then experiment with configuring DNN before installation. - At least this way you will be able to tell if it was a configuration problem or a hosting problem.
- You can of course try all of this on a localhost installation to see if the configuration you are trying to setup works in 4.3.4 - certain elements may have changed but it should be very similar. - I haven't looked at this yet in 4.3.4
I can't really tell from that error what the problem could be. - Have you set it up to use ASP.NET 2.0? |

Okay I got the site working only problem is I was so fixated with getting the site working that I forgot to load the site template that I had from my internal site.
The question is how do I install the template now? |

Okay I'm back. Maybe cause I have a huge site to upload I'm having problems. I have done all I should and going through Wizard. It seems to stall there. When I go in a peak using another browser it's like it only gets a portion of the downloads - lots of pages missing etc. I then expanded the config executionTimeout =600 and maxRequestLength=81920 and I got more files downloaded but the page doesn't give me a final complete. And if I go in there's lots of pages/files/images that haven't been uploaded.
I really did a lot of work on my internal site and would hate to have to go page by page and replace but is that my only alternative cause I'm getting no joy out of the wizard.

Interesting, I have not come across this as I usually just do the basics with a template and then add the content to the live site.
Your other option could be to:
In your localhost installation - add a portal alias for your new live website URL Then create a backup of your localhost installation database and all of the files Upload all of your files Upload the backup database Install the backup database Go to the URL of your site
Problems that may occur with this could be some URLs might be wrong, ie. set to localhost rather than your site URL, but this should get all of your content live.
This is probably your only other option. - It will wipe your current live installation, so perhaps try it with a different web installation as a test run.
I would suggest posting a question in the main DNN forum for the template time out problem and see if any of the core team can provide an clues.
If you find a solution, please let us know as this will be very useful for everyone, thanks, |

Thanks Lee I actually tried that as well and I get a very disorientated site, everything is all out of place even though containers and skins have been loaded. I was hoping that I needed to to little configuration.
The reason why I post here rather than DNN forum is there seems to be little interaction with someone who knows dotnetnuke it seems the forum is for people with problems only. No-one seems to answer .... my posts anyways. ;o( That's why I really appreciate all the help you have given me.
Can I just ask when i'm loading or trying to load the new template using wizard. What is a reasonable time to wait? Cause the page seems to wait forever with a _doPostBack in the footer window and nothing else happens.
I have to figure out an answer today so will post when I find a solution. |

Sorry Lee I get no results from the dotnetnuke forum so I'm back.
I have worked nearly 30 hours solid on getting my live site working. This morning I decided to go back to 4.03 since it's been fine on my testing server. I got the basic site working and since export feature doesn't work for me (before and after new installation) I spent the day creating and populating my pages once again from scratch again.
I was doing great then all of a sudden I get a runtime error that tells me to set my config file - the same error I got yesterday. the same fault I've seen on dotnetnuke. I haven't funny enough seen it on this site that's why I still have little faith in dotnetnuke. That and my internal site is working fine.
The worst is I don't even know how to solve the problem. There's got to be some difference in my settings between the servers. That's why I thought I'd do a fresh installation and I wsa doing great until without a word of warning I get an error. Is dotnetnuke that unstable?
It would really be nice to be able to create a clean site then simply update databases with all your information on. Believe me I've tried that also to no avail.
I'm actuallying having huge second thought wanting to go the dotnetnuke way. Apart from your site there is no support whatsoever. dotnetnuke's site has runtime errors always and they should throw away the search engine as I've never had it work properly for me.
I don't even know which direction to turn. Too late to try another solution but if I can't get anywhere it looks like I'll have to and probably loose my job. |

Hello,
Sorry to hear about all of these problems. DNN Creative is actually running on 3.2.2 ASP.NET 1.1
Which is probably why it is more stable. - The most stable version is actually 3.1, as after installing 3.2.2 I noticed new errors appearing in the log files - since the updates to 3.3.4 and 4.3.4 they should be stable however - BUT - I have not yet tried them out on a live busy site, only localhost tests.
I have found the same problem with the main DNN forum. - If I have a problem, it is very rare that anyone answers my questions!
I'm not sure what is a reasonable time to wait for installing a large site. If it appears to be hanging, as a test I would just leave it for 30-60mins. -
If you want, send across the template file to me - or give me a link to download it from and I will run a couple of tests from my end.
I will be around all day today so I will try to help you out if I can, thanks,

Thanks for the link to the template,
I’ve been looking at the template on a localhost installation and I can’t get it to work, it just times out, I’ve tried various settings in the web.config file, but nothing seems to work. I would suggest pinging your original post a few times (say once a day) in the DNN forum to see if you can get any attention and suggestions from the core team.
Make sure that you mention you are using a template file that is 500MB in size.
It looks like the only option left is to create it on the live site which I’m sure is the last thing you want to hear.
For the DNN 4.3.4 errors that you received, at which point did they occur? – I found some errors occurred when I was playing with the registration form settings for the latest tutorials for issue 13 & I couldn’t recover the DNN installation. – The way around this is to not delete any of the original portal registration form settings, but to turn the visibility off if you do not require them. |

To continue I again did complete new install. I had some difficulty in uploading such a large file through FTP that I had to send the disc to my server to upload. I got 4.0.3 working and used wizard to get my files back. All was working well until I reintalled FCKEditor. I copied the 2 files Delisoft.... & FredCK to the bin folder, copied entire DSKCK... folder to the htmleditorsproviders folder and edited my config file to include the new htmleditor details. I now get a blank screen saying
Nothing To Install At This Time Current Assembly Version: 04.00.03 Current Database Version: 04.00.03
I've tried switching back my config file to the old htmleditor but I can't move forward from the nothing to install screen.
Have I lost the site again completely?
I'm not liking the idea that if there's a config problem I tend to loose my site and I have to start the wizard over again. I know I made a huge mistake in not developing the site fully on the live server. But I like to test things out completely before I launch a new site. And I'm very happy with the way dotnetnuke runs on the internal site just having way too many problems getttig the internal site over to the live server.
Give me the old fashion way of backing up a database and restoring it. This dotnetnuke appears to be very flaky and bails out when it doesn't like something. I'm really nervous about setting the site live when I eventually get to that - then something gets uploaded that the config file doesn't like and I get a screen that I can't move forward on.
Thanks Lee for your response but switching my web.config back doesn't seem to remove the error.

This is very odd, I have not come across this problem.
I would suggest you triple check your web.config file with an original web.config file from the DNN installation files. All I can think of is that somehow you have mis-typed something somewhere.
Or did you create a backup of your web.config file before changing to the FCKEditor? - Can you use the backup?
I don't think DNN 4.0.x was ever 100% stable. - I never switched, but I heard comments from many developers. - 4.3.4 is supposed to be stable, but I have not tested it on a live busy website and as yet have not heard comments from developers on its performance.
I think I will be leaving my critical websites in DNN 3.2.2 for sometime until i can see that these later versions are 100% stable. - I have seen several times now the main dotnetnuke.com website down with server errors, so it doesn't look good.
- I have been told that there is a new 4.3.5 version due out in a couple of weeks, so perhaps that will help with the stability.
Regarding your problem, I really don't understand why this problem has occurred.
I have not tested FCK Editor on 4.3.4. - I would suggest that you try installing it to a clean localhost installation first and see if you can get it working correctly, - this may help you to find the cause of the problem.
If I was getting so many errors, I would be tempted to do a localhost test run using v3.1 - at least you will know that you are working with the most stable version and if you are launching it for a client you will be less likely for things to randomly break. - But I would think that this is the last thing you want to do after the number of hours you have already put in!
Let us know how you get on, thanks, |

Thanks Lee for all your help!!!
I had checked my config file and the only lines that were different were the machine settings and path/login to database. I was going to give up and write my pages using PHP. But then I spoke to one of our programmers. He wrote a script for me to deploy my internal site to the live server. All that dotnetnuke tells you not to do. It works!!!!
Now to just finalize I'm trying to get a specific page to appear when users login. Is that possible?
just a note I don't know if it's just me but dotnetnuke.com gives me an access denied script when I login. - Still have scary dotnetnuke dreams at night! ;o)
Again Lee, your training videos have been enlightening. For someone to learn dotnetnuke without them must have either left dotnetnuke alone or are still fighting a battle alone. |

Lee, I'm sorry I'm running 4.0.3. How do I append the ct/login to my user page?
thanks in advance.
... I can get onto dotnetnuke.com again, must have been a little glitch. |
