I am looking to create a custom module that will take data from a custom form and write that data to a comma delimited file.
Is this possible within DNN? Are there any good tutorials out there?
While working on my local sandbox, I have attempted with this code placed in the click event of a button...
Try
Dim fs As New FileStream("file.doc", FileMode.Create, FileAccess.Write)
Dim s As New StreamWriter(fs)
s.WriteLine("This is an example of using file handling concepts in VB .NET.")
s.WriteLine("This concept is interesting.")
s.Close()
Catch
txtTest.Text = "it didnt work"
End Try
Now it didnt fail but I cannot find the file.doc on my local? So not sure if it worked or not.
Any ideas?

Is this code snippet from inside a DotNetNuke module?
If you executed this code and didn't get an error, it worked.
The file should be created in the default directory, whatever it is. I would set a breakpoint right after the new file is created, and look at the properties of fs to see what the full path to the file should be. Alternatively, specify a full path in your code, and the file should be there.

your absolutely correct...
it did write to my harddrive but not under the webroot. I'm not sure what path to use in the creation of the file so that it will write to a location within the webroot.
I tried "/Portals/0/file.doc" and it ended up in the catch block. Do you know what should be used to write to a file that will be accessible through the filemanager within DNN?

i can write to the location on my harddrive where the filemanager will be able to see it but if that location is not the same on the server where production resides it will not work.
what I am trying to do is dynamically create a link to this file so the user can download it after it is created. Is there a relative address I can use so when the module is installed on a different machine it will work as intended?

One site that I find to be really useful is
http://classbrowser.subzero-solutio...home.aspx.
It has all of the DotNetNuke namespaces in an easily browseable format. You'll want to look at DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalInfo. It includes these properties:
Visibility Type Name Accessibility
public String HomeDirectory (Get , Set)
public String HomeDirectoryMapPath (Get)
Without looking, I'd guess that HomeDirectoryMapPath is what you need.

Great site - thanks!!
public String HomeDirectoryMapPath (Get) is the one I was looking for - with that I can place the file in the filemanager for whatever portal the module is installed on. I can then grab it and create a link or email it using sendmail.
Thanks!!
