Adrian,
One of the Events Module's settings is Theme/Skins. If you select FixedBlue as the skin, you'll have a calendar that takes up much of the screen width.
While I haven't worked with the Events module, I would imagine that you could create a Theme/Skin that would fill even more of the screen. The Online Help for the Events Module at DotNetNuke doesn't have information about how to skin the module, but you might get some help if you visit the discussion forum
There's also a beta version of a new Events Module, so perhaps a new version is in the offing.

Update: I looked a little further...
It appears that the Events "Themes" are controlled by CSS files. So, you ought to be able to create a new theme by modifying one of the existing CSS files.
I found that if I tweaked this definition for FixedBlue and changed the width and height from 100 to 120, that I could make the calendar "almost" fill the screen width, to the extent that the container allowed.
.EventDay, .EventDay td
{
font-size: 7pt;
overflow: hidden;
width: 150px;
height: 150px;
text-align: left;
vertical-align: top;
color: #0000ff !important;
font-family: Verdana;
}
