Scanning through your module development tutorials i see a lot of references to DotNetMushroom RAD and R2I (or somethign like that). I thought module development could be done in Visual Studio? What are these other two, and why use them?

Yes, you are correct that DotNetNuke modules can be created with Visual Studio.
DotNetMushroom RAD and Open Web Studio from R2I are DotNetNuke modules that can be used to build DotNetNuke modules. Essentially, they are frameworks for modules, and provide the tools to create modules. You don't need to know VB or c# to use them, but you do need to know some HTML, SQL, and CSS and you need to learn how to use their internal "languages."
There is a third module, XMOD, the is similar.
As to why you would use any of these, the answer lies in the "rapid application development" moniker.

Very interesting. So before investing time in learning how to make modules in visual studio i should consider making that time investment in one of those frameworks. My question is, is there any drawback to not programming your own modules in C# using Visual Studio? Is there anything i won be able to do ?

That's a tough question, and it's one that only you can answer. A lot of it depends on what you know. If you know how to develop c# ASP.NET software, working in VS might be the way to go.
The great advantage to the use of RAD, OWS and Xmod is that you won't have to learn as much about DotNetNuke at the beginning. And if you look at all of the various applications and modules that have been developed with them, there certainly is a lot of flexibility.
On the other hand, working in c# (or VB) offers the ultimate in flexibility.
Finally, my recommendation is that you always look for existing modules first.
