Hi,

On our intranet, I want a module where users can, without signing in or registering, leave a short message that will then be displayed in a list.

e.g. a user could write "Going for a run after work - anyone keen? Call Bob on X465"

and that message would appear in a list on the front page.

Can anyone point me towards a module that would do this?

Take a look at Smart Thinker's Wall module that is part of their Smart Social group of products.

Just built this module in Xmod - I call it the Town Cryer.  Modeled after Twitter.

Has a character count down counter like Twitter. Integrates with Private Message module from Ventrian. Can also use the Housekeeper Xmod add-on from Fatgeorge so your database doesn't get overloaded with old "cry's" (Tweets). I have it set to delete "cry's" after 8 days. You can have the display auto scrolling, display only recent "cry's", etc.

Screen shot attached. My site has an antique theme but you could style it however you wish.

Unfortunately, it looks like both require the user to be logged in. Because this is an intranet and only visible within the company firewall, I wanted anyone to be able to just quickly post without bothering to log in.

After looking around and thinking the problem through a bit more, I realised I could do it wth tools I already had. If you're interested, what I did was create a new table in my database with the fields Message and Posted. I set Posted to have a default of getdate().

I then created a new tab and used FormMaster 2008 (which I already had) to build a very simple form with one input (Message) which I Silent Post-ed to my new table.

Then on my display page I used the built-in Reports module to pull the Messages from the table using the query SELECT Messages, Posted FROM tbl_Msg ORDER BY Posted DESC.

Worked a treat.

This doesn't allow editing or deleting messages, so I built a couple of separate ColdFusion pages to do this. After reading gbrown's post I thought about the long-term build-up of posts in the database and built another ColdFusion page (really have to learn ASP.NET) that deletes old posts after a month and scheduled it to run every week.

If anyone does take advantage of the anonymity of the form to post something naughty, I can dig their IP address out of the Form Master table.

Probably not an ideal solution, but it's only for an intranet and shouldn't get to heavily overtaxed.

No, there's no requirement that anyone be logged in. DotNetNuke pages and modules have permissions, and these can be set to to allow use by "All Users."

bgrown's Town Cryer module seems ideal, and it follows DotNetNuke conventions.

When you say that you created "Cold Fusion" pages, do you mean HTML pages? I don't think that it is a good idea. This approach isn't particularly maintainable. I agree that this isn't an ideal solution, and would urge you to learn a bit more about DotNetNuke.

Town Cryer is set up to work with logged in users as is but it doesn't have to be that way - you can easily change it. Since it is built in Xmod you would need Xmod to use it. But I'd be willing to send you the templates for you to plug into Xmod. Just give me an email address.
