We need to ensure that the display name that the user enters is unique.

The only idea I could come up with was to create a database trigger on the users table on insert to check to see if the display name is unique. If it is I raise an error:

RAISERROR ('The display name you entered has already been used by someone else. Please try another display name.', 10, 1) WITH NOWAIT

This does prevent the user from registering if the display name is not unique, but the message I created in the raiserror statement is not displayed on DNN. Instead a message that is displayed is

"An Unexpected Error Occurred During Registration. Please Contact The Portal Administrator For Futher Information"

This does not help as if the user does not know what the error is he will not be able to rectify it.

Does anyone know if there is another way to make sure the display name is unique

If you make the Display Name the same as the Username, then it will be unique.

To change the display name format, log in as an admin or host (superuser) account, and go to the Admin->User accounts menu option. Click on 'user settings', and enter your required settings in the Display Name format field. There are currently four tokens that you can use, [USERID],[FIRSTNAME],[LASTNAME] and [USERNAME]. Use the [USERNAME] format.

Thanks fo the reply, I see that this could work, however in our situation we do not want the username and the display name to be the same. We want both of them and both need to be unique.

Do you know if there is any way to get a raiserror statement from a SQL stored procedure or trigger to be displayed in DNN? That would be an easy fix and would benefit us elsewhere in our application where we need to apply some business logic to existing core modules without having to change the core code.
