Hi,

I use a really simple set up to experiment with DNN on my P.C at home using Windows XP. It works flawlessly.

- Install Visual Developer Express Edition from Microsoft web site

- Download the latest copy of the DotNetNuke "Install Version"

 - Extract the DotNetNukeinstallversion.zip files to the root of your local drive and rename it DotNetNuke (remove anything else)

01. Start Visual Web Developer Express and File > Open Web Site and open DotNetNuke

02. Go to Menu > Debug > Start Without Debugging. The site will build and the internal web server will start. The installation wizard will appear and guide you through the installation. Choose AUTO

03. When finished scroll to bottom of browser window and click on “Click Here To Access Your Portal” and the site will come up

My problem? This same set up does not work on my new laptop with Windows Vista. Everything works till the web broswer opens, but the web browser won't show the DNN main page. It does a time out like if a webpage is timing out. Sorry to sound so simple this is my level of dev with DNN.

Does anyone use this method to play with DNN and if they have run into the problem of it not working under Vista, have they found solutions?

which is slightly different to yours and then to do the same in Vista you do need to make a couple of changes. - As it happens I have just recorded a video of how to do it (currently editing) which will be released around 1st April.

Basically - following the method that I use for installing, you need to enable IIS in vista

Then in IIS – go to properties, add application (This is instead of creating a virtual directory (if you create a virtual directory you can convert it to an application) – Then select Classic .NET AppPool – this is required for it to work with IIS7

I really liked the set up I had going as I didn't have to tinker with ISS, but it looks like for Vista I am going to have to give in and set up using  ISS.

I'm also a bit limited software wise...which is why I was trying to stick to using the Express (free) versions of the Miscrosoft software. I'll guess I'll have to move on a bit and learn some more. All good.

The tutorial is nearly complete, the method that I use also uses the free software of SQL server express, so there are no additional costs for setting up DNN on vista.
