My aim is to add an additional (parent) portal to my development site which is hosted locally. My first portal is accessable by using the equivalent of www.mysite.com in the browser; I would like the second to be accessed by www.mysecondsite.com. Each will represent a different website, but each portal will remain within the one DNN site.
I can find information which address multiple portals in scenarios where DNS settings etc are applied on the hosting providers server (Video 1 of the How to Create DNN Portals (Parent and Child) takes this approach.) But I can't find anything for a 'local' approach.
I am using MSSQL 2005, ASP Net 2 and IIS 6 and am currently wrapped around the axle trying to get alignment between IIS (the website properties and the application pool settings), web.config, the home directory in C: drive, and the new portal's settings. (Apart from that I'm on top of it!)
Would someone be able to point me to where an 'idiots guide' to this may be found? Many thanks.
PS the end state will see the live sites hosted locally, not with a third-party provider.

Hello,
1) create a new virtual directory which uses the new local URL
2) point this virtual directory to the folders within your existing DotNetNuke installation
3) create the new parent portal, but use the URL for the new local URL that you have created in the virtual directory
That should be all you need to do, thanks,

Thanks Lee,
I have tried to do what you said but I still can't crack it. I've been at it for quite a few hours and I am really stumped.
I continue to get "the web page cannot be found" error on entering the new URL into the browser. This is what I have tried, based on your advice. (I started to write this up as a contribution to the forum
after
I had a solution. That's why the fluffy notes.)
1) create a new virtual directory which uses the new local URL, and
2) point this virtual directory to the folders within your existing DotNetNuke installation.
Open IIS
Open Web Sites
Right clk the existing web site (eg mywebsite.com)
clk New
clk Virtual Directory (Virtual Directory Creation Wizard will open)
Next
Alias
Type in an alias of the new site eg www.mynewwebsite.com
clk Next
Content Directory
(This is where you point this virtual directory to the folders within your existing DotNetNuke installation.)
Browse to location of the home directory of the existing site
(I set it at the ‘C:\WebSites\mywebsite.com’ level, but have subsequently tried every other level. No joy.)
Permissions
Select ‘Read’, and ‘Run Scripts’
clk Next, Finish
(The new directory will appear as a folder inside c:\Web Sites\mywebsite.com. Right clk and amend a couple of properties:
Documents
Move the Default.aspx to the top of the list. ('Default.aspx' is the standard DNN home page.)
ASP.NET
Select ASP.NET version 2.0.xxxxx
3) create the new parent portal, but use the URL for the new local URL that you have created in the virtual directory
I followed your tutorial. All seemed to go OK except that an email adress is mandatory. I invented an address but, since I have not yet configured SMTP, I got an error message and a red cross alongside the newly formed portal. Surely that won't throw everything out? Will it?
Here is what I have explored and have attempted since:
* The spelling of the new site's name is correct everywhere. No misteaks.
* I originally set up the Virtual Directory (mynewwebsite) outside the mywebsite folder; it is now inside it. ie the IIS path is SERVER\WebSites\mywebsite\mynewwebsite. Beneath it are backups, html and logs. html is fully populated.
* Application pools: I have tried assigning the Default AP, the mywebsite AP, and also a newly created mynewwebsite AP. It's now back to default.
* I have recreated the new portal three times (I'm desparate!). 1, 2 and 3 have been deleted, and I'm running with 4. It seems to have been populated correctly. The content is near enough to being the same as #0. My only reservation concerns the red cross. Is it caused only by the SMTP conflict or is there something else that could be amiss? I have climbed all over the portal setup and can't see anything that could be otherwise wrong.
* I am able to ping "www.mywebsite.com" but, initially I was not able to ping "www.mynewwebsite.com". I have since added two lines to C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (a Google/TrainCert.com hint):
127.0.0.1 www.mynewwebsite.com
127.0.0.1 mynewwebsite.com
(Similar lines were need to get the browser to look 'locally' to find www.mywebsite.com and mywebsite.com.)
On a positive note, I can now ping the new URLs. Unfortunately, the browser continues not to recognise either.
* I have pointed the virtual directory at all folder levels in the existing DotNetNuke installation, starting at c:\websites and going all the way down to Portal 4.
At this stage of the day, I am out of ideas and have no thoughts on where else I can fiddle.
Sorry to trouble you, but have I missed something that is obvious? Any tricks of the trade?
I sure would like to knock this over and move on to simple things like adding text and colouring-in pictures!
Kind regards,
Gordon
PS In my first post I missed my OS; it's SBS 2003.

Cracked it!
I had added a host header for the new site/virtual directory; but I had missed placing that same URL inside the original/root site.
Here is the missing step.
2a) Inside the root DNN installation, add a host header for the new site
In IIS open/SERVER/WebSites/
rght clk Mywebsite.com … (ie the root DNN installation)
open Properties
open the Web Site tab
clk the Advanced control
clk Add
in
Host Header value
: type the URL of the new site (eg www.mynewwebsite.com)
Set
Port
to 80 (may have to change it later if there are clashes)
Leave
IP Address
as (All Unassigned)
Save
(repeat to add other aliases as required)
Exit.
