Does anyone have suggestions for a 3rd party events/calendar module for DNN that has better security options (like allowing users to edit only certain categories or posts, etc) over the core events module?  I've already checked Snowcovered and TMMworld.

I think that the installable zip file is located INSIDE of the file that you specified.  There may be several versions.

Unzip that file and see what is inside.  You may need to extract one of several versions and install that.

I would uninstall and then try installing again.  Try to verify that the database tables were removed by the install procedure. 

If the problem continues, check with the module developer because some is definitely wrong.  If this is the DotNetNuke Events module, check the appropriate forum over at DotNetNuke.com.
