Hi All,
I could do with some views.... Apologises for the wordiness of the quesion...
I am a freelancer and am looking for a development platform that will enable me put solutions together robustly and quickly within the ASP.NET world.
I have to say that my knowledge of ASP.NET2/C# is developing, but not as good as I would like it to be to get apps out quickly although in the near future it will be.... so DNN may be an accelerator...???
I have always had a belief that applications should be assembled with the greater amount of time being spent on application design and on understanding what the best components are. As a last resort one may have to build the components and this should be easy using something like ASCX controls...
My initial experience with DNN (V3 I think) left me with the impression that it was really a colloborative portal that was a little slow. However with the latest version and some interesting feedback from users I am led to believe that it could be used as a serious Web application "Assembly" platform....
I will want to develop the more traditional DB apps.... and have identified modules such as indoo SQL grid and XMod.
Out of interest I know of a company who seems to be doing this, but also using Sharepoint for the more commercial heavy weight solutions...
What are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Sam

The performance of DotNetNuke itself will not be a problem, the performance is related to how well your servers can perform. - There are some large, very busy commercial sites out there now using DotNetNuke.
Yes those modules will be helpful for getting you quickly started, others to look at are the ListX suite of modules by bi4ce.com
Anyone else got any comments?

Lee et al,
Thanks for this... With regard to performance my main question would be that bigger and more efficient servers can speed along anything. Obviously leaner software will zip along using less resources which is always a good thing. Ny suspicion is that a pure ASP.NET2 site will run more efficiently especially if the code is precompiled. I understand that DNN does not support precompilation so one has to rely on pinging sites to activate the JIT compiler.
Obviously there is a tradeoff here since in theory solutions can be assembled much more quickly using DNN.
Some of my professional colleagues would not use DNN other than for quick portal/colloboration type internet sites for this performance reason.... Instead they would use pure ASP.NET with additional components like NHibernate for specific apps. Perhaps they are not as enlightened as they should be .... I do not know..... I have another colleague who does use it quite abit and find the performance a problem on his shared servers whereas the dedidcated server installs zip along.
My gut feel is that ASP.NET2 offers the leaner and meaner solution while DNN "Web Application Framework" offers a quick solution to those quick problems.... I may be being unfair due to my limited knowledge..... hence my wish for this discussion.
Thanks,
Sam
