Hello I have just recently tried to make transparent a live dotnetnuke site onto my local machine via http://localhost protocol. I have backed up the live database where everything was stored and restored it successfully using microsoft server management 2005 express. My question is in regards to logging in to this installation that I have installed on my computer. When I go donw to the bottom of the screen (where login is) and click on it and get the login skin fine. However when I try to log in either using the username and password a assigned for my local database or when logging in with the login and password I use on the live server I get the error message telling me that the login failed. When I go back to the live site and use the same exact username and password there are no log in erors just in the localhost version of the site where I am trying to create a development environment. Does anybody have any suggestions what could be going on here. The only thing I can think of is somehow their is something about the live site that the login script is looking for and can't find? Does anyone know what file contains the login script in which it compares usernames and passwords any of this would certainly be helpful in cracking this case thanks again Bo

hello, Have you had a look at this tutorial: How to backup a live hosted DotNetNuke website and restore it to a localhost installation If you are having trouble logging into your localhost DotNetNuke installation, this could be related to the web.config file. - have you copied all of the files from your live website? - you need to make sure that you copy the live website web.config file as this file includes the unique machine key codes for interpreting the passwords. - you will then need to edit the copied web.config file to point to your local SQL database. I have taken a look at the tutorial about transferring the livesite to a localhost and as far as I knew followed it to the letter. The only thing that differed was in order to connect to my database I had to replace in the web.config file the generic data source with the name I gave to my local sql server here is an example of the line from my web.config file ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As you can see I had to change the generic Data Source=.\SQLExpress; for what I named the server in the sql express on my computer. Once I did that I connected to my local database reason I know it was much slower than the live website and took much longer time to access pages. I could navigate my database via the localhost and go to pages on the website via localhost I just can't login in as host or user, or anything that would allow me to add modules, or do any kind of maintenance to dotnetnuke only see what was already done. Here is another line I attempted to add to the web.config file when I couldn't get it to work and may be of interest to you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <!-- --> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I commented the above line out because it didn't seem to make any difference as far as letting me login to the localhost. I don't know if it is something to do with the iis or not. I can go ahead and retry to download all these files from the ftp site and re config the web config file just to see if maybe something got corrupted in the line of transfer. If you have any other suggestions after seeing these snippets of code let me know thanks Bo P.S. I also commented out the connection strings that dealt with the serer 2000/2005 and only left the ones dealing with mysql express thanks

I don't know what happened to the code snippets that were suppose to be between the two sets of dotted lines. The first set was suppose to be the following snippet snippet 1: <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=machinename\dotnetnuke;Initial Catalog=database name;User ID=user id;Password=password" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> snippet 2: <!-- --> This was the line I said in the last post I commented out because it seemed to make no difference I will give you other connection string lines I have and you can see if per chance something in it would cause the login not to function to show yes but not to validate my username and password. I am using the information that works on the live site but doens't on the local to log in here are the rest of the connection strings that are active minus the real user name password and databse thanks <appSettings> <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules --> <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=machinename\dotnetnuke;Initial Catalog=database name;User ID=user id;Password=password" /> <!--Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules --> <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=machinename\dotnetnuke;Database=databasename;uid=user id;pwd=password;" / ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ That is all perhaps that last line should be deleted and is causing issues since I am using localhost I forgot I kept that line uncommented. If you have any other suggestions let me know those above 4 lines are in the exact order consecutively that they appear in my web.config file thanks Bo

Hello, I'm a bit confused with which bit is where. - Have you download the example web.config file that's included with the videos? You should be able to compare your code and see any differences. - The element that you commented out is needed by older modules, but it needs to have the username, password etc. for you local database It should be of a format similar to: < replaced with [ so that it displays in the forum [connectionStrings] [!-- NOTE: HERE IS AN EXAMPLE CONNECTION STRING FOR THE LOCAL WEBSITE USING SQL SERVER EXPRESS 2005, AFTER ATTACHING THE DATABASE TO SQL SERVER EXPRESS --] [!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005 Express --] [add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Initial Catalog=db150audiotuition;User ID=leesykes;Password=leesykes" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /] [!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2000/2005 --] [!-- [add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=71.50.14.104;Database=db150audiotuition;uid=audiotuitiondb;pwd=1234567890;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /] --] [/connectionStrings] [appSettings] [!-- NOTE: HERE IS AN EXAMPLE CONNECTION STRING FOR THE LOCAL WEBSITE USING SQL SERVER EXPRESS 2005, AFTER ATTACHING THE DATABASE TO SQL SERVER EXPRESS --] [add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Initial Catalog=db150audiotuition;User ID=leesykes;Password=leesykes"/] Double check with the example web.config file and this should help you solve your problem.
