Hi,

I was just wondering if it is possible to create "Multiple Public Security Roles" in the latest version of DNN. I'm planning to develop an auction website (somewhat like eBay) where I'm going to have 2 main User Roles. 1) Buyer and 2) Seller.

Obviously, both are going to be public roles, but I cannot set the "Auto-Assign" to true for both of them, because I want the user to have either a "Seller" role or a "Buyer" role.

How do I achieve this functionality ? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can have multiple public security roles. If you don't want to assign the roles automatically, you can do it manually. If you want to do the assignment automatically as people sign up and you ask them to sign up as buyers or sellers, you could do this with some code.

On way to do this would be to redirect people to a specific page after they register. If they've specified buyer or seller at registration time, or you could as them here, you could put some code in a module on the user page that would set their role, based on answer to a question or two.

Meanwhile, I have another question for you. It seems like there’s no way by which I can use Query Strings easily. I’ll have to modify the code I think. I have a links box for “Buyer” and a links box for “Sellers”. These boxes would have various categories (computers, books, etc). When the user clicks on any of these Categories, I want to take him to another webpage that’ll display Sub-Categories (based on the category he selected). I can’t think of any idea on how to achieve this functionality. Can you please help me out?

I think that there is at least one auction module for DotNetNuke.

Thanks, JNCriag, but I had mentioned earlier too - I am not interested in buying third party components - I am very much interested in learning DotNetNuke. If I wanted something quickly, then I might have hired a programmer instead.

I did not know that the functionality that I am looking for (passing parameters thru' Query Strings) was so advanced and complex.

I know you said that you don't want to purchase third party modules, but the Dynamic Registration Module and Dynamic Login Module by Datasprints ... umm ... spring to mind.

I can't really help you with programming a solution, it may be worth your time checking out the modules Joe mentions. - You could always get hold of the source code of those modules and adapt them to your own needs. Thanks,
