It's an interesting question, if you are experienced with ASP/VB you should not find it hard to make the transition to creating DNN modules.
I would suggest you follow the tutorials that are listed in the Resources section of the site and have a go.
But, having said this, if the main requirement is to fetch and display data, there could be a module out there that can help. - Check out Bi4ce as they have several modules which tie together exactly for this:

Well, rollback is always easy if you create a backup of your database and files before making any changes ;-)
If you are worried about this, then try it out on a test installation first backing up, making changes and restoring, just to make sure you are covered.
Also, for any testing you do I would always recommend you test on a localhost area first incase anything goes wrong (it usually does first time round!)
