Hi,

I am attempting to be a new user of DotNetNuke.  I am familiar with other CMS products and really like what I see in DNN through the tutuorials on this site.  My problem is that I have spent the last two days trying to install it so I can use it myself.

I keep getting the messages:

Error Installing DotNetNuke

Current Assembly Version: 03.03.07
ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider

I have see on the web that others have had this problem but none of the remedies I have seen have worked for me.

As background, I am using MS Visual Studio .NET 2003, IIS 5.1, ASP.NET 1.1, and a eval copy of SQL Server 2000 along with DNN 3.3.7.

My SiteSqlServer is:

<add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;" />

Can anyone help with this?  I am falling behind on this project and could really use some help to get over this problem.

If possible, I'd recommend upgrading to the latest version of DNN and .Net 2.x. The latest DNN has a wizard that can help you through the initial configuration.

If you stick with 3.x, you'll also want to look at the database connection string in web.config.

Thanks for your reply. I have been looking at and trying different things with the connectionString to no avail. I opted for DNN 3.x because I thought I had read that I would need to upgrade my .NET Visual Studio and Sql Server (from 2000 to 2005). Is this not true? If I can use my current VS and SQL Server, I would gladly move up to DNN 4.x

Yes you need SQL Server 2005 to run DNN 4.x. -  But you could use virtual PC to create a virtual environment and install the free SQL express 2005 to run DNN 4.x without affecting your current development environment.
