Hi there. Has anyone tried linking up a DNN portal to an existing application that manages members etc?

We currently have a website where members can register and then log in to use a service. We also have master account / sub account functionaility. We'd like to use DNN to make the front end of our website more interactive with a content management element.

I'm struggling to see the best way though of making the membership work. I can possibly create a membership provider that links to our existing membership database. The problem is that we need to maintain the master account /sub account functionality as well as support our own registration process.

I guess that ideally I would want the DNN portal to recognise someone as being logged in, allow them to interact with the various modules as a logged in user, but without the registration and account management elements. Hopefully I'm making some degree of sense! Any help very much appreciated.

I manage a site that uses an external (to DotNetNuke) database for user registration and validation. This was done by creating a separate membership/role/profile provider that replaced the default provider.

Users actually register, subscribe, pay, etc. at the other site. Then, they can log into the site and they are validated according to their credentials from the other site. We use security roles to control access to the site. If users are registered at the other site, they can log in at our site, but they are treated as non-subscribers but different from visitors. If they are logged in, and are also authorized to use our site, they are assigned to a "subscribers" role. We don't (yet) have gradations of the subscriber role.

So, yes, you are making a lot of sense.
