I've genuinely had a good search around the site and the forums, and can't find an answer to this - so please forgive me if this has been answered somewhere else...
I want to understand how DNN is designed to allow content to be developed.
I've seen the articles about copying a production server to a localhost and vice-versa, but these are whole DNN installations, not just a single portal or sub-portal or even a single page.
I'd like to be able to develop DNN content on a development server, then transfer just that content to the live server, whether it be a single page or content on a page. As my live server is running user content such as forums, blogs etc, then I can't afford to overwrite the live database with a copy from my development server as it would lose all recent content that's been added.
I'd be really interested to know how others work this way with DNN - has someone written an article or guide on how to develop DNN content, pages, sub-portals, portals etc without causing issues to site users?
Thanks, Nick

This is the way that I approach things ...
First, it helps to get the notion of "pages" out of your head. I have a friend who I've been trying to get to take the DotNetNuke "plunge" and his real sticking point is... "Where are the pages stored?" He gets really nervous when I tell him that there's really no place that traditional web pages are stored.
I also manage a couple of sites that include forums, blogs and other user-submitted content. So, you can't just blithely overwrite a site with a new database.
What I'm doing now is to use a test site for developing new stuff that isn't on the site: mostly testing modules and learning how to configure them. But, when I'm ready to put something new up on the site, I do it ON the site, using the "admin only" security role for the new page. Then, I'll switch off the old page (if I'm replacing") and then switch on the new one. If it's something as "simple" as updating a Text/HTML module, I'll often copy the text from a hidden module and paste it into a live module.
When developing sub-portals or portals, you can do this on a developmental server, save the structure as a template. Then you can move the template to your live site. Again, use the admin security role to prevent people from seeing what's under development.
I'd love to hear how others to this ...

I personally tend to add content directly on the live site. - I have heard that some users use the Redgate software:
http://www.red-gate.com/
Software such as SQL compare / SQL data compare will allow you to synchronise a localhost and a live database. - I haven't use this software but it is supposed to be very good.

That's really
very
interesting - I am keen to hear how anyone else does this, but I'd be extremely keen to hear how people have made SQL Compare/Data Compare work with DNN.
At this point, I should be clear, open, honest etc and state that whilst my use of DNN is entirely personal and nothing to do with my work, I do in fact work for Red Gate Software!! I'm genuinely interested in this process - I hope that's okay?
Please feel free to give me honest comments ;)
Thanks, Nick
ps Oh, and it really is rather good software!!

he he that's hilarious! - Well feel free to send a copy of the software across for testing ;-) !!
I did a quick google of 'dotnetnuke red gate' and found this blog post:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community...fault.aspx
It doesn't really mention how they implement the red gate software but you may be able to get some info out of it. - I'm also very interested in the red gate implementation as I think it could really help the development process, so if you come across any further info let us know.
Thanks,
