I am familiar with creating a page or adding the Account Login Module to a page and then specifying the page as the login page in the Site Settings.

What I am about to need to do is put the login on the home page.  With the login on the home page, visitors would then be able to login upon the first visit on the web site without clicking.  Upon logging in, the login needs to "disappear".

I have found that it is quite easy to put the Account Login on the home page, and make the module only visible to the "Unauthenticated Users" role, essentially fulfilling the request.

However, the Account Login Module on the home page needs to look different from the normal Account Login Module.  We intend on keeping the original login page (right now).

Upon looking at the requirements and the abilities that are in the current version of DNN (04.04.01), it would appear that I would need to create a duplicate login module for the home page to accomplish this.  Can anyone verify this?  What are your thoughts on accomplishing this?

I've just had a quick look and yes it it appears as though you are correct.  If you make a change to the account login module this will also change the login page when you click on the main login token.

so, it appears as though you need to take the code from: admin / security / signin.ascx and add this to your own module.
