I am trying to setup a DNN Community development environment. Basically I have copied my DNN live environment folders and contents within a "development" top level folder. From here I have pointed the development folder to a separate domain name (development.dnn.com) and configured a development db backend from my live db backend. I can navigate to http://development.dnn.com but once I log-in (http://development.dnn.com/?ctl=login) I get automatically re-directed to my live site home page (http://live.dnn.com/Home.aspx). In the login modules user settings I have a redirect setup to go to Home.aspx but surely that should re-direct to http://development.dnn.com/Home.aspx not http://live.dnn.com/Home.aspx? Unless I need to change db aliases?

Any help appreciated.

First of all, you will want to have a completely separate copy of the database as the database for your development site. That is, your development site should be a complete copy of the database and web directory.

Once you have this working, you will need to add an entry to the Portal Alias table for the new domain. It's easiest to add the new portal alias before you copy the database. It won't matter being in the live site, because that site will never see requests intended for the development site.

Once you have done that, DotNetNuke will handle all of the URLs correctly.

One thing to look out for, though, is links in the site that have the domain name included. You will want to change them to be relative links rather than absolute links.

The tutorials on moving a site from live to localhost and back to live will help you here. Just change your thinking as live to dev to live instead.

I have a complete copy of the database and web directory working Once I add a new entry to the PortalAlias table will I have to reference this new entries ID within any of the other tables? It's just the redirect after login still seems to take me to the live sites home page instead of the development sites home page?

Besides the portal alias, you need to have DNS for the domain pointed to the site.

Youmalso need to have IIS configured so that the domain is bound to your site. Your host should be able to help with this.

I have configured DNS and can browse to the development site. However, once I navigate to either: http://development.dnn.com/login.aspx or http://development.dnn.com/?ctl=login and login I get redirected after login to: http://development.dnn.com/home.aspx which is fine but the dnn top admin panel or any of the module manage options don't appear? - It's as if I haven't logged in at all?

Finally solved this Hope this helps someone else...

Within IIS, disabled windows authentication, enabled forms authentication - easy as that!
