As recommended I have successfully been using the app_offline.htm whilst performing upgrades to my DNN sites.
However with the latest 2 upgrades this feature has stopped working and now when I rename the file to put the website is a holding state it no longer shows my “maintenance in progress come back in 15 minutes” message.
Instead I get “Oops! This link appears to be broken.”
Update whilst I was writing this……
In Chrome, Firefox and Safari it still works but not in Internet Explorer 8
Unfortunately I cannot force the world to abandon IE8

Is there a solution? I'm assuming I could change my Hosting setup to look for specifc files and put app_offline.htm top of the tree, but I do not think that this prevents the site opening if people go to www.mysite.com/page27.aspx

If the site "works" in Chrome, Firefox and Safari, but not in IE8 look to IE8 as the problem. It is possible that IE8 is caching a page. Try clearing the cache.

You might also want to go to your DotNetNuke installation, clear it's cache, restart the application and recycle the apppool.

Since the page is created at the server, it's really not possible for the browser to have an effect on what is sent to it, unless there is a caching issue or it's looking at the wrong place.
