Dear DNN community!

I am currently working on a skin that should open lightbox-like popup boxes when clicking on items (anchor tags) in a tag cloud (I am not using any modules; just absolute positioned links in a container div because it is not necessary to change the cloud within DotNetNuke). Therefore I would like to load the content of these boxes from other pages via ajax.
Right now when I set the href of the a tag to a specific page and load it via ajax it puts the complete page including the html, head and content tag into the popup box.

Is there a way to only fetch the content (ContentPane) of a site with ajax (a url parameter, I suppose)?
If there is no javascript available, the browser should follow the URL and display the complete page.

You would have to identify the modules that exist in the ContentPane and load them. That might be difficult since the pages don't exist (you got around that with the URL targeted by the href.).

But, I'd be willing to bet that there is a way provided that you can target a div in the target page, or something like that.

Oh, there are modules that you can use to open existing modules in lightbox windows. Mandeeps.com has LiveContent. There are others.

I could load the whole page and then parse the DOM to only get a specific div but that would mean quite some overhead for the request itself and the processing. Also I don't think using an existing lightbox module is an option since the style of the boxes is very specific to the site.
Is it possible to render a page with a skin by passing a parameter or a specific url structure? Then I could use Index.ascx for the Normal pages and a separate Boxes.ascx that only returns the content.

You can create skins that have NO additional stuff in them save the modules. That might save some work.
