When using DNN 6.0.1 the Add New User is forcing the fields to be validated improperly
First
I turned popup off because they looked ugly. With out popup on I went to add an new users using the admin control panel.
The add user function would not allow and punctuation in the user name. typicaly we use first.last names as the user name so that it matched email address.
The first name field wanted names 5 charaters long, sucks if your name is Dan, Joe, U, Ward etc.
Second
I turned the popups on and I was able to create a New user.
Once again no punctuation is allowed in user names
But it did let me create a user with a 3 character first name.
Third
I tried to just modify the user name in the database by inserting a period in between the first and last name.
Great it show up on the User as first.last but try and log in as first.last, or modify the user profile or do any thing with this user after changing to first.last you are hooped, and you get error or as I am currently writing this message stuck in some loop whatching the little wheel spin.
You would think a Database system would provide some flexibility to work with the information on the backend. I have tried other modification at the DB level and I reccomend stayiong away form it. DNN's DB must be poorly normalized, or relying on weird indexes.
Any suggestions welcome.
Ward
Cranky, because 5.6 worked okay.

I'm wondering if you are using a third-party module for managing users. I'm not aware of any validation done on usernames, etc.
I just added several users with short names and x.y type usernames. It was on a 6.0.0 system. I found no problems.
It's very odd that this should be affected by the popup setting ...

No; I using the standard DNN 6.0.1 login and Add User sreen. In both popup and non-pop up mode there are red arrow boxes telling you if it is invalid even before you hit the add button. (look like it is coded at module level.)
I cannot find any where you would turn validation on or off, and I cannot rember ever turning a feature like this on or off.
I did figure out how to get around it at the DB level, there are 2 place where you have to change the user name.

OK, I've now got a 6.0.1 system!
If you go to User Accounts, User Settings you will find a new "User Name Validation" setting that takes a regular expression to validate the username. You can change it.
Removing the regular expression works just fine. I can create usernames like "a.b"
The Add New User screen does do validation on email addresses, and the Username, First Name, Last Name and Display Name are required to be non-blank.
Profile properties can have regular expression validation, too.
------------
Short summary: Removing the validation expression for Username will get you back to what was in earlier versions.

Thanks it works, when I make the field all blank
I also tested it with the popups turned off, and for the first name it is letting me now put in single letters. (It looks like the validation string was being applied to username, first name, last name as well.)
Thanks
Ward

I'm glad you're not cranky!
I did some testing and couldn't see any evidence that the regular expression for the username is being used for first or last name. But, I'll keep looking around ...
