I have several HTML modules in my web site. Today I discovered that when I attempt to insert a new image into any of the HTML modules, the built-in Image Manager won’t upload new images into my “SiteImages” folder.
With the Image Manage still open, when I try to page through (using the slider) to see if the image uploaded, I get the following error message:
Callback loading error:
Portal Root/SiteImages/
There was an error in the callback.
Once this happens, the images that are already in the “SiteImages” folder (about 36) disappear from the list. I have to close the Image Manager and reopen it to see the list of the images.
I tried to workaround this by uploading an image via FTP. I can see the image file (for example, XYZ.jpg) in my FTP client but it doesn’t show in the Image Manager. After that, if I attempt to upload XYZ.jpg through the Image Manager, it tells me the file already exists, but I can’t see it.
“This is not good,” he said.

I haven't run into the problem that you describe. It is possible that you have a permission error in the directory into which you are trying to save the file. So, the first thing to do is make sure that the permissions are correct.
After uploading files with FTP, though, you should go to the File Manager and click the Synchronize Files link (after checking the Recursive check box). This will make the files visible in the Image Manager.

Thanks, Joe. According to my provider (Reseller Choice) it was a write permission issue that they have since resolved. I'm asking them where they specifically did this so I'll post that info here when I find out.
And thanks for the tip on the File Manager.

Great!
I assume that it was a file permission problem with your web directory, or with at least one subdirectory. That would be fixed at the operating system level, not within DotNetNuke.
