I have a situation where a company is shutting down its website but sending the traffic to my website.

I am assuming in the first instance that pointing the DNS will achieve the first stage.

I know if I use portal alias that my site will display as theirs. That is in the address bar my site would be www.mysite.com but from them it would show their url www.theirsite.com

I need the situation where when their site is directed to mine that my sites URL is used.

So the question is: is portal alias the correct solution or is their another way?

PortalAlias is part of the solution.

1. Point DNS for the old URL to your new site.
2. Configure IIS on your site to that request for www.theirsite.com are directed to your DotNetNuke site
3. Add www.theirsite.com to your DotNetNuke site's PortalAlias table.

Now, requests for www.theirsite.com get routed to your site and are handled correctly by your DotNetNuke installation.

To make the www.theirsite.com URL go away completely, you can use infinty.com.au's URL Master module. As it says on their web site, one of the uses for this module is:

"Domain-based Redirects - the Url Master module can enforce a particular domain to be used for a DotNetNuke portal just by selecting one of the available portal aliases in your list. This is perfect for enforcing www. redirects, or for moving your site from an old domain name to a new domain name."

I think that there probably are ways to do the final step without purchasing a module, but this is by far the easiest way to do it.
