When I was freelancing in a previous life, I had IIS 6, Visual Web Developer 2005 and DNN all playing together nicely so I could design/tweak DNN 4.x skins and containers. I stopped freelancing two years ago when I was hired by the company I currently work for. This company now wants me to develop their new website. I need to set up IIS7 and Visual Web Developer 2010 to play nicely with DNN 5.x on my Windows 7 Ultimate machine. I attempted it myself with no luck. I've been a DNN Creative member long enough to know that there must be a tutorial - or two or three - that show how to do this. But I can't seem to find them. If anyone can point out where they are, I would be extremely grateful. Thanks! |

Sure. Look for "How to install DotNetNuke to Windows 7" on the Tutorials page. That will get DotNetNuke and Windows 7 installed. I would also recommend looking over Chris Hammond's blog at DotNetNuke.com. Chris has some entries about setting up for module development. You don't need to go that far if you are only going to be building skins, but reading won't hurt. I believe that DotNetNuke.com also has some video tutorials or webinars related to that. But basically, once you have DotNetNuke running on Win 7, you can just open the skin files in VS. |

Following the tutorial went fine up until the actual installation of DNN. When running the DNN installation, on the very first page of the Installation Wizard there is the following message in red: "The Auto option has been disabled as the DotNetNuke Application cannot connect to a valid SQL Server database. You can continue to use either of the other two Wizard options and configure the Database settings at the appropriate Wizard step." I've never seen this message before and have never used the Auto option anyway. I left the selected installation method on "Typical" and clicked "Next." I receive the message "Your site passed the permission check." I click "Next." I've attached a screen capture of the "Configure Database Connection" window. There is no "Test Connection" button. When I click "Next," I get the following error message: Connection Error(s): Index #: 0 Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider Class: 14 Number: 15372 Message: What does this mean? |

I believe that the Test Connection button has been removed, and that the functionality is performed when you click next. And, you obviously received and error (after all, it's really not optional). What was the message? Here is a previous discussion: http://www.dnncreative.com/Forum/ta...fault.aspx There's something wrong with either the connection credentials of with the way you specified the SQL server. Take a careful look at them. If possible, confirm that everything is ok by using the same credentials and server to connect SQL Server Management Studio to your sql server. |

OK... this time I started completely from scratch. I installed Virtual PC with Windows 7 Ultimate and did all necessary updates. I downloaded the latest SQL Server 2008 (Express) installation file into the Virtual PC as well as DNN 5.6.1. I have dual monitors so essentially I had Lee's tutorials running on the left monitor while I was following along task-by-task, step-by-step on the right monitor. I got the same results. I've attached 3 screen captures of the DNN installation. This is driving me nuts. |

Never mind... I found the problem this second time around. It was a DEU... defective end user [laugh]. I wasn't paying attention and ran the DNN installation on the host PC rather than the Virtual PC. Having dual monitors can bite one on the backside. |

Still not sure why the host PC installation didn't work. But the Virtual PC installation just finished and everything is workign as advertised. Thanks for your patience. |

The error I got was the Connection Error(s): Index #: 0 Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider Class: 14 Number: 15372 Message: But now I did a Windows Update and it appears that I can now connect to the SQLExpress database. Strange, but it's working. Thanks for responding though! |
