Hi there, I am a newbie to DNN so please bear with me. I am trying to use DNN4 to develop an application in order to replace an existing old one. Since the current application already has its own tables of user logins/passwords, roles, etc. tables, which are not in the same user/profile related tables as those in DNN4's DB. also the password encryption in our old application is using a different format as what DNN4 uses for its password management...(actually i am still trying to figure what method does DNN uses in password encryption..., any info anyone?)

I wonder what would be the best approach to combine these with this new DNN4 application. the object is we don't want the users to re-register again so we would just do a backend DB integration from old login tables into DNN4's, but on the other hand, try to utilize as much existing login authenizcation functionalities in DNN4 as possible.

Would appreciate if Lee or some DNN experts here could shred some lights on this.. Much appreciate in advance.

There is a module available which helps you to bulk transfer details into DNN, including passwords etc. You can find the details here: BulkUser Import and Export

It  supports XML and CSV formats.

I don't know how this will affect your own password encryption. - If you can get the details out into a XML / CSV file with the password not encrypted and then import the details in using the module you should be able to get around the problem.

If you are looking for further info on DNN Membership, there is a DNN Membership document within the docs that come with DotNetNuke.

I hope this gives you some starting points.

I have personally not transferred this data across yet and I'm sure sooner or later I will come across a client who wishes to transfer their current app to DNN along with all of their users and details, so I will be interested to hear how you progress. - Will you let us know how you get on and the solution that you used / problems you came across?

thank you for the quick response, would surely put into consider about that bulkUser import/export module.

my another concern is some of the login authenization logic for this application: as this app should be tied to some
other applications (which are not written in DNN), i believe even if i could do a bulkUser data import, i still would need to modify DNN's login authenication procee. I was reading another thread on your site in regard of customizing Registration module. The general recommendation seems to be, not to touch the core module but build something else and replace it. in the case for the Login module, should I do the same as well? Please advise.

Would surely keep posting here about this development progress - DNN is very new and i start to appreciate its flexibility and the wide support group out there.

Hello, yes if you want to upgrade the login security  then I would create a completely separate module and tie that in with DotNetNuke.

As a starting point, learn how to create a module in DNN and how it all works. There are several links to tutorials in the DotNetNuke resources section. (View the module developers section)

I would get to grips with the basics first of creating a module before tackling something like this. Once you have an idea of how it all works, you will find it much easier to implement the module that you need.

Another suggestion is to look at www.snowcovered.com to see if any modules already cover your needs.

I have a new DNN 4.0 site. I am writing a webservice for the dnn site that I can call from a winforms app to validate users on my DNN site. I was hoping that I could simply reference one of the dnn dll's from my webservice and login. However, I haven't found a way yet. Does anybody know how I can do this? Please let me know.
