Hello,
My first post, so I hope this is the right section. I'm new to DNN too, so if this is an obvious one apologies.
I'm a C# and web UI developer, so having installed and set up the latest version of DNN I started making a custom skin. I wanted to have a separate menu as my sub menu, as opposed to a drop down, so after reading a few articles I managed to find I got what I wanted working with one glitch. When a sub menu item is selected the sub menu does not render as I have set the Level property to Child to avoid showing the root items. Here is my code:
ID="dnnNav"
ProviderName="DNNMenuNavigationProvider"
IndicateChildren="false"
ControlOrientation="Horizontal"
CSSControl="mainMenu"
PopulateNodesFromClient="false"
ExpandDepth="1" />
<dnn:nav runat="server">
ID="dnnSubNav"
ProviderName="DNNMenuNavigationProvider"
IndicateChildren="false"
ControlOrientation="Horizontal"
CSSControl="subMenu"
Level="Child"
PopulateNodesFromClient="false"
ExpandDepth="1" />
Does anyone know how I can keep the sub menu on screen with a selected item if the selected item has no children. I understand why the menu is behaving as it is but obviously it is not the desired effect. Alternatively, is there anyother means of not showing the root items on a menu?
Thanks,
Michael

Take a look at one of the Minimal Extropy skins with Index Left Menu in the name. That has a left nav that shows the children, and does render the menu when a third level page is selected.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, they actually use a disfferent menu control called dnn:LeftMenu which appears to have a few more useful properties on it. I'll give that a go... although it isn't strictly a left menu the principle is the same I suppose...

Ah, I missed that. Does the "left menu" feature a horizontal orientation.

l years ago I used the Snapsis CSS Menu (snapsis.com) for an application similar to yours. It worked just fine.
I havent used the new DNN Nav menu that way, so I'd have to do some digging to try it.

It doesn't seem to but it is just a modified Telerik PanelBar by the looks of it so I am writing a custom skin for it that will hopefully force the items into a horizontal view with a bit of CSS.

Got it working. The following CSS allows the left menu to display horizontal:
.RadPanelBar_Clarity .rpItem
{
float: left !important;
}
Clarity being the name of my theme/skin. All seems a bit of a hack but it will do for now until I understand the workings of DNN a bit better.
ID="dnnNav"
ProviderName="DNNMenuNavigationProvider"
IndicateChildren="false"
ControlOrientation="Horizontal"
CSSControl="mainMenu"
PopulateNodesFromClient="false"
ExpandDepth="1" />
ID="dnnLeftMenu"
Width="900"
SelectedPathHeaderItemCss="selected"
ShowOnlyCurrent="RootItem"
MaxLevel="1"
EnableEmbeddedSkins="false"
Skin="Clarity" />

DotNetNuke now includes wrapped versions of many Telerik controls. I hadn't remembered that. It's also possible to use the Telerik menu control, too, but I've never done that.
