User Name & Display Name

This probably sounds a bit dumb but I've never understood the need for having a display name in addition to the user name. Members need to know the user name if they they want to send each other messages (display names don't validate) so I set my forums to display the user name anyway. I've trawled through the DNN documentation but it never seems to explain the logic behind anything, just how to do it! I'd appreciate anyone who can enlighten me.

I don't know why the design is this way. You can also go to the Users, User Settings page and define a default format for the Display Name if you don't want it to be separate. If you define it as [USERNAME] then that will be done automatically.

That's a great solution, thanks, Joesph! And now the Display Name field doesn't even display during registration, so it won't confuse people. Brilliant!
