I am very new to DNN. I have purchased hosting which is supposed to support DNN. My site is to the most part but certain module's are giving errors. ie the media module which gives the following error message:-

I have asked my hosting company for support, they confirm it is not there end!!!

Also whenever I access my site it asks for a user name and password. I dont need to enter one just click ok but i am not sure why it does this.

The only thing I can think of to check is the web.config file. There are 2 parts where you need to enter the details for your SQL database. - Make sure both of these elements are entered in the web.config file.

I found a similar problem when using the blog module - it uses the legacy method for connecting to the database which i had not correctly configured and hence got errors similar to the one listed here.

Also, you may want to upgrade to the latest version of DNN before you begin adding content to your site - the current version is 4.4.1 which includes performance and security upgrades.

Well, I just clicked on the site, and I can see that you now have a permissions issue. When I click on the url, it is asking me for a windows login and password. I'm not sure which version of DNN you're using, but if it's DNN 4.x, this is most definitely an ISP issue, depending on your access to the website. If you do have access to the *root* folder of your website, and you are using 4.x make sure that the NETWORK SERVICE account has complete control over all folders and subfolders. You can find this by right-clicking on the root folder, select 'Properties' and then click on the 'Security' tab.

If you do see the NETWORK SERVICE account there, the problem is that one or more of the sub folders or files does not have NETWORK SERVICE with full control. That's all it takes for this problem to happen--copy in a file that doesn't inherit the parent's security roles--it's a bug in both XP and W2K3 that Microsoft has never addressed properly. 99% of the time when you copy in a file, it works fine, but there's always that 1% of the time that the file doesn't inherit permissions properly.

The way to fix this is first of all to do the right clicking I suggest above. Then add some role, or change the permissions of a role, and click 'Apply'. Once the hourglass goes away, then undo whatever role you just changed. This will ensure that all sub files and folders inherit properly. Of course, I'm assuming DNN 4.x and w2k3 server and that NETWORK SERVICE did have full control. Good luck. I used to hate these errors--it would take me hours to figure out how to fix them, but after dealing with them for a number of years, as long as I have access to the root folder of the website, I can fix it.

If you do NOT have root access, then this is an issue your ISP needs to fix. If they claim it's not their problem, they are lying to ya. Find another ISP if so.
