Hi; Several months ago I tried to update our DNN installation to 5.4. I tried several ways to directly migrate - all unsuccessful. I am now thinking of now doing a clean 5.5 install (or 5.6) and then to somehow transfer the content across. I am just wondering if someone has done this before or if there are any videos on the site showing this process? Thanks Thomas

If you are using modules that all support import and export of content, you can export the portal from the existing installation and then import it to the new one. You will first have to install all modules and skins used in the old installation to the new one.

I am interested, though, in which version you are updating from and what errors you encountered. It may be something that is relatively easy to fix.

I was updating from 4.9.5 to 5.2.3. (sorry got the information wrong in first post) Can't remember the error messages I got, but the site was not accessible after the update. I have spend days trying different options of upgrading (based on information in various forums) - nothing changed the result.

When I go down the path of a manual update do you know if there is a way to re-create the pages and the modules placed on them by simply copying the information in the database (which tables are involved)?

I want to avoid to manually re-create each page and place the modules in the containers. I am aware I will need to do the import/export for custom modules though.

Can you revert back to the starting point? If you can, you should be able to export the portal. I would save the database and web directory before trying a new installations. The export will not export users, but there are modules that will do that.
