DNN5 mdf file in App Data

Can someone tell me why the database for DNN5 on SQLExpress is an mdf file in the App Data directory? And is it possible to promote it to a regular DB on sql? I found a few articles on "attaching" it via SMS... but I want it just to be a regular SQL db like it was in V4.9.4. (I know I can upgrade but I am having an issue with my old site and I want to start from scratch). How do I make this a regular sql db? I am not a SQL god my any means.. maybe I am asking for something silly and just don't know it?

I figured out a way to do this shortly after posting the question. I went into SSME, created a new DB with the name I wanted. Closed SSME, and stopped SQL server. Then I copied the mdf & ldf files from the App_Data directory to the desktop and renamed it the same name as my newly created DB. I then copied these two files over the real ones in the SQL Server data directory, restarted SQL, changed my web.config file's connection strings and, voila! I have what I wanted.
